For the third meeting of the WA Footy Almanac, members were asked to bring along a book to recommend. Below are the books and reasons why they appealed.
Dennis Gedling – My Favourite Year edited by Nick Hornby. An eclectic collection of accounts of a favourite football year, taking the reader to a time and place in the writers’ lives.
John Townsend – Commander in Cheat by Rick Reilly. Trump the golfer reveals the way the US President plays – not always ethically – and uses the game to promote his brand.
Rick Vredenbregt – The Football War by Xavier Fowler. A well-researched look at the respective leagues and the different paths the VFA and VFL took and why.
John Stevenson – The Magic of Spin by Ashley Mallett and TJ Over the Top: Cricket, Prison and Warnie by Ken Piesse. Australia’s greatest spin bowlers examined, and the redemption of Terry Jenner – his life before and after his stint at Her Majesty’s pleasure.
Barry Nicholls – Blood on the Tracks by David Tossell. An entertaining and detailed account of the 1974/75 Ashes, full of nightmares for the England side.
Kieran Fernandez also attended and contributed to the conversation in a lively manner.

Thanks for this Barry. We’ve had a Perth-like summer in Ballarat! Finally some rain today has been most welcome.
Im not a big reader of sports books but there are two I can highly recommend. They are more about team culture and so good i read them both twice.
1. Legacy by James Kerr. A first time insight into The All Blacks and their rich traditions, values, behaviours and expectations.
2. Any Given Team by Ray McClean. Former Ballarat teacher and RAAF trainer started with Central District in SA then the Saints, Swans and now most AFL teams and national teams have his Leading Teams working with them..
Big thanks again to John for sending me a copy of Bob Beecrofts book.
Cheers
