Player that left club prior but had already won premierships:
Rodney Eade played 229 games for Hawthorn from 1976-87. He played in 4 premierships for Hawthorn in 1976, 1978, 1983 and 1986. He played 16 games for Hawthorn in 1987 and left Hawthorn at the end of 1987. In 1988, he joined the Brisbane Bears, where he played 30 games from 1988-90. Hawthorn won the premiership in 1988.
Not quite within your criterion, but Matthew Clarke was at Brisbane when Adelaide won 2 flags, then at Adelaide when Brisbane won 3. Ultimate bad timing, I have always thought.
What a dead-set corker idea, Rod! Oh, the stories each of these players would tell! I am very much looking forward to your team, 150+ game players that retired a year too early.
As Matt says, what a ripper team idea. Not sure if you’re excluding players with a flag(s) already under their belt, but Gary Ablett Jr is surely the most high-profile of those.
Matthew Ryan played 45 games for Collingwood from 1985-1989. He played 2 games for Collingwood in 1989. He then left Collingwood at the end of 1989 and played with the Sydney Swans in 1990, and then the Brisbane Bears from 1991-1992. Collingwood won the premiership in 1990.
Sorry, Rodney, that I keep finding more players.
Craig Bolton played 29 games for the Brisbane Lions from 2000-2002. He played 6 games for the Brisbane Lions in 2002. At the end of 2002, he left the Brisbane Lions and played 170 games for the Sydney Swans from 2003-2010. The Brisbane Lions won the premiership in 2003.
Ryan Gamble played 24 games for Geelong from 2006-2010. He played 2 games for Geelong in 2010. At the end of 2010, he left Geelong and played 11 games for St Kilda in 2011. Geelong won the premiership in 2011.
Dale Kickett played 15 games for Fitzroy in 1990 and 2 games for West Coast in 1991. At the end of 1991, he left West Coast and played 21 games for St Kilda in 1992. West Coast won the premiership in 1992.
He then played 8 games for Essendon from 1993-1994 and then played 135 games for Fremantle from 1995-2002.
Tigers let go of Vickery, Deledio and Conca and won the flag the following year, 2017.
If they stayed it may have been a different result.
Thats the unknown
Lids was still a quality player but had injury problems.
Great pick up Stephen and Alex, I have left some good ones behind. I usually pride myself on my research but I have clearly stuffed up on this one as you have advised some very good name, I mean Ablett Jnr how do you miss him.
Thanks Matt for your kind words.
Thanks Dan, Conca was still at the club in 2017 but left at end of 2018.
