Almanac Teams: Famous Family Members

This week’s side is based on VFL/AFL players who have famous or well known family members in other pursuits. I have stuck to immediate family members and not included grandparents, uncles/aunts, nephews/nieces etc for the sole reason as that would make the potential list huge.

Once again, I have based the majority on players from the 1980s. To be honest, most of these players are sport related and once again I wrote them down when doing my footy jumper series and I have not really topped up on this, though Jack Peris’s debut last week was a new addition. There are sure to be players I have missed so please feel free to let me know in the comments.

Comments

  1. G’day Rodney, may I add a link had by Patrick Bowden who played 75 games kicking 70 goals with firstly the Western Bulldogs , then Richmond, between 2001 and 2007. His brother Joel is an Australian Labor Party representative in the Northern Territory’s Legislative Assembly. Joel was elected as the member for Johnston in a 2020 by-election. Joel was also previously the secretary of Unions Northern Territory.

It would be remiss if I didn’t mention that in an earlier phase of Joel’s life, 1996-2009, he played 265 games for Richmond.

There was of course another brother Rhett who appeared at AFL level. He also played for Port Melbourne.

Of course all are sons of former Richmond premiership player Mike Bowden.

    Glen!

  2. Jarrod_L says

I might have to pick you up on the Bowden brigade, Glen!

Rhett, while a fine footballer, superb cricketer – and alongside his wife Helen, generous hosts to young pharmacy interns doing placement on Christmas Island – in his own right, never played in the AFL. Sean is the third brother who did so.

  3. Luke Reynolds says

Very interesting team Rodney, many of which I knew about but several links I didn’t.

Can also add Steele Sidebottom and his brother Ryan, who played 27 first class matches for Victoria and Warwickshire as a right arm fast bowler, taking 67 wickets at 31.08.

  4. Ta Jarrod, it seems I had too many Bowdens to chose from.

I feel two Bowdens played for Port Melbourne: Rhett & Sean?

    Glen!

  5. Thanks Glen, I perhaps should have had Joel Bowden in the other pursuits team. What I believe Michael Bowden was an amazing community man. Your right Rhett & Sean played at Port Melbourne

Thanks Jarrod amazing still that three Bowden boys played.

Thanks Luke was unaware of that. Looking at it did Ryan play just the one game for Victoria
