Western Australian Footy Almanackers second meeting

For the second meeting of the WA-based Almanackers, we heard from the renowned sports journalist John Townsend on his book Ugly: The Ray Sorrell Story.

I was largely unaware of Ray’s remarkable first-person story. It’s well-written and covers a diverse range of topics. The story about Ray’s beloved wife, Jean (now deceased), is heartfelt and revealing. Ray doesn’t hold back on his sporting and life victories and disappointments.

Ugly also contains many wonderful black-and-white and colour photos and press clippings.  John spoke about how the book came to be and some challenges in deciding what to include and leave out.

Stories such as Ugly are valuable, for once these players are gone, the tales of their lives and experiences can be lost forever.

You can purchase a copy of the book through East Fremantle Football Club, Swan Yacht Club and the Post newspaper Onslow Road, Shenton Park.

You are welcome to join in. Just send an email to [email protected] and John Harms will put you in touch with Barry and the crew.
