Brad is standing and watching, his youngest sister, lowering into the ground. His body is tense, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I know what you’re thinking, Bradley. I am marrying him, so I hope not”. Rachel, Brad’s other sister says. Turning her head quickly away. “No actually” Rachel says, turning back towards Brad. “We’re supposed to be honouring Destiny”. As a tear is appearing in Rachel’s eye. “Don’t do this”. Brad just stares back coldly.
Brad is still at the cemetery, long after the others have left. His head is down, thinking. Eventually Brad starts heading towards the cemetery gates.
Brad looks towards the sky, the cloudless sky for the funeral, has past, in the place of it, are creeping grey clouds. The temperature inside his car is stuffy, as there is sweat under his arm pits. It is a lonely drive home, knowing that he’ll never see Destiny again. Brad arrives home, greets his girlfriend, they haven’t been together long.
Tossing and turning during the night, Brad is restless, rising early the next day. He cannot stop thinking about Scott, Rachel’s fiancée. Brad suddenly remembers something, and it was Destiny herself, who made him doubt it. He’d gone to visit Scott, at his garage. He’d expected him to be alone. Only to find Scott, with Destiny, she was giggling.
With that memory, without a word to his girlfriend, grabbing his car keys, he makes his way to his car.
“Just who I did not want to see” says Brad, as he sees two of Destiny’s friends. Named Ethan and Cassie. Cassie stares back, unable to find the words.
“Obviously, we didn’t-“.
“What were you doing? You were in the car with her, you should have made her slow down”. Looking down Brad sees they are holding hands. “What, so, you two are together? Where is my sister? Eh? What about Destiny?” Brad turns away, going in the opposite direction. Scott’s garage is close by, Brad decides to walk there.
“Hey Brad, wasn’t expecting to see you today”
“Were you sleeping with Destiny?”
“Arh, What? No! If you’re wondering about that day. She just came over, and asked me some questions, about the car she wanted to buy”.
Unconvinced, Brad decides to leave, and go see his sister.
“Hey Rachel” said Brad, walking into his sister’s apartment.
“How are you, Bradley?”
Releasing a sigh, not answering straight away, “As well as can be expected, s’pose”.
“Can I fix you a drink? I’ve got the coffee machine on if you want”.
“Yeah okay, I’ll have a coffee, thanks”. They sit at the round dining table in the open plan kitchen.
“Still got the apartment I see?”
“Yeah, Scott’s looking at houses for us. We’re going to take a look on the weekend”.
While Brad is sitting, scanning photographs that are atop a box, he sees a mix of photos from their childhood. Reaching for a photo of Destiny that he picks up; he sees a photograph underneath of Rachel and Scott together.
“Not that again” seeing where Brad is looking. “I love Scott, he’s part of our family now”. Continued Rachel. “He’s home now, just heard his car. Don’t say anything to him”.
Scott walks in, looks down at the photos then back up at Brad.
“What’s going on here? First you were at my garage, now you’re here”.
“Oh my gosh Bradley!” Exclaims Rachel.
“Cut the crap Scott. Did you?”
“I want you to leave” says Scott.
“Not until I get an answer”. Brad replies through gritted teeth. Rachel is standing and looking between both of them.
“Fine, yes, we did. What’s it to you? She’s dead anyway”.
Rachel looks stunned and is staring at Scott.
“That’s our sister that you’re talking about” says Rachel.
“Yeah, sorry, I shouldn’t have said that” replies Scott.
“But you love me, baby, don’t you? And you want us to have a future together, don’t you?” asks Rachel.
“Why would you still want to stay with him?” asks Brad, motioning to Scott, surprised she’s even considering staying with Scott.
“Why did you dig this up Bradley? You should have not mentioned anything”.
“Is that my thanks, is it? Says Brad. Walking out glaring at Scott, he leaves their apartment.
“Of course I want a future with you Rachel. That was a silly fling and I regret it fully”.
“Ok babe”. Shrugging her shoulders she smiles and starts clearing the mugs from the table.
