Almanac Rugby League – 2021 NRLW Round 2: Waterlogged!

Round 2 of the 2021 NRLW competition was played in very wet conditions at WIN Stadium on Sunday afternoon. By the time the third match came around there were pools of water on sections of the field. Given the conditions, the standard of play suffered somewhat but was no less entertaining and willing in spirit.

First up, the Broncos continued on their impressive way but the Knights were in no way disgraced. With Boyle and Lenarduzzi leading the way and Upton adding her touches of class, the competition leaders were soon out to a 12-0 lead, which grew to 22-0 as the second half progressed. The Knights struggled for cohesion but put respectability into the result with tries to ex-Broncos Feterika and Fressard. Lauren Brown was a standout for the Broncos. Final score Broncos 28 d Knights 10.

The Roosters’ finals chances took a real blow when they went down to competition newcomers, the Titans, in an upset. The Titans were all grit and energy while the Roosters failed to find their rhythm. After clawing back to a four point deficit with three minutes on the clock, the Roosters were finally undone in the last minute when an offload in heavy traffic by veteran Steph Hancock, allowed Brittany Breayley-Nati to scamper over to seal the Titans’ first win in the competition. Final score Titans 26 d Roosters 16.

The Dragons have emerged as the main threat to the Broncos after showing great spirit and resolve to down a challenging but error-prone Eels side in the slush. Even without inspirational skipper Kezi Apps, the Dragons forced their way over and then defended grimly but more than adequately to hang on for a deserved win. Final score Dragons 10 d Eels 0.

Round 3 sees top teams the Broncos and the Dragons clash on Sunday at Commbank Stadium in what just might be a Grand Final preview. The Broncos are the benchmark as far as skills, flair, attack and defence are concerned. And they’re a very good team. The latter is the Saints’ forte along with their determination. It should be quite a game! I’ll stick with the Broncos.

In the other two games, the Roosters meet the Knights on Saturday at the SCG with a win a must for both sides if they want to stay in contention. Both sides are better than 0-2. I think the Roosters will break through for their first win of the season. Then the Titans and Eels meet later on Sunday in what should be a great battle between the two competition newcomers. I favour the Eels (just) who, I think, might just have an edge in physicality.

Player of the week: Lauren Brown (Broncos) for a great, all round game.

I’ve obtained my ticket for the Grand Final at Dolphin Stadium on April 10. Get in soon!
