And that was the off season! We seem to have managed managed to get through it without too many unwanted front page stories apart from some blood-letting at both Wests Tigers and the Bulldogs as well as a bit of push and shove at the Broncos.

NRL season 2024 kicks off tonight with the opening game of the first round of the Pre-season Challenge between the Bulldogs and the Storm at Belmore. The remaining games of the round will be played on Saturday and Sunday. See the schedule of those games here.

The annual Indigenous v Maori matches get underway in Townsville tomorrow night with the women’s game from 4.50pm (local time) followed by the men’s clash at 7.10pm (local time). Add one hour for AEDT. All four teams have had to chop and change their line-ups as players have withdrawn for any number of reasons. You can see what we think will be the final team lists here. Last year’s matches produced two thrillers and there’s little reason to think that this year will be any different.

Next weekend’s World Cup Challenge between Wigan Warriors and Penrith Panthers will be played at DW Stadium in Wigan with kick-off scheduled for 7.00am AEDT. More on that next week.

Round 1 of the NRL season proper will come to us from the scene of this week’s Super Bowl game, Allegiant Stadium, in Las Vegas, USA on March 3. We’ll have to wait to see if the NRL can win its gamble of taking the game to America via the world’s betting headquarters. More on that one later too.

From there it’s ‘all systems go’ as we settle in for the season and head towards Grand Final day on October 6. You’ll find a link to the draw for each of the NRL, NRLW and State of Origin below.

Enjoy the ride!

    Greetings Ian
Looking forward to sharing the NRL 2024 season via your articles.
By a simple/complex twist of fate, I landed on the fringes of the Blue Mountains (about 5 minutes drive to Penrith) in 2021 – and have enjoyed being a closet Panthers supporter ever since.

  3. Oops, missed the Charity Shield, RITV! It won’t be my last mistake for the year, I’m sure.

  4. Karl,

I circulate a weekly email to the Almanac’s rugby league aficionados. Would you like to go on the mailing list?
