Almanac Racing – Straddy

Not many Quaddies are all Group Ones so the revamped Eagle Farm card this Saturday is pretty special (add four G2s in support!). The caveat, of course, is the track being first up and maybe underprepared. I looked at BOM before Racing Australia! As if finding a winner isn’t tough enough.

Unquestionably the Stradbroke (BR9, 1400m, Hcp) is not just Queensland’s best race but in the top drawer of the national calendar’s options. Again, it provides fascinating conundrums for punters who’ll have to make some big calls. Can’t understand why J.McDonald’s off but pleased to have the Magic Man steering Counterattack. Saving on Malaguerra.

Certainly won’t be taking a Quadrella with the 2yo (Atkins) and the 3yo colts (Derby) too problematic. More enticing is the QTC Cup (BR5, 1300m, Quality, G2) in which I’m happy to back Federal and perhaps the competitive Brisbane Cup (BR6, 2400m, Quality, G2) where the previously frustrating Ecuador could be the one, with Rudy the roughie.

Down in Melbourne there’s a wind that will sweep through HQ without hitting many patrons…interested parties head up to Swan Hill for their big carnival this weekend.

As always there are plenty of discussion points, including the call for the L.K.S.Mackinnon to move to Final Day (and lose its traditional name), raised tension with RVL Stewards as Sarah Moody gets a please explain and the good news that Protectionist is back as a winner – in Germany and, predictably, the corporates have “slashed” his Cup price.

Good luck!

  1. Cowshedend says

Crio, thought I heard the other day it’s a definite, Mackinnon to Stakes day doubling the prize money to 2Mil and Stakes to Derby day, great move.
Nice to see Mummify’s ex hoop making news for the wrong reasons again

  2. yeah apparently so. Makes sense though could have preserved the “LKS” .
    What has Danny done now?

  3. Lots of runners at Eagle Farm should be interesting w, here they come from later in the day there. I like Federal in the QTC cup, Junoob is the Brissy Cup where a lot of the field meets Real Love up to 3.5Kg better and Tavi Bay in the Oaks. The Straddy is a hit and hope for me but I’ll try a rough Trifecta or first 4 and hope for a miracle but will be including Kaepernick and Precious Gem in those as both are flying and it is a handicap I cannot see Music Magnate, Malaguerra or Counterattack saluting.
In Melb I like Falago in the 5th, huge run last start in Adelaide- 3 deep the trip a few checks and ran on well enough to tip me out of the Trifecta- I’ll get square tomorrow. I will also try Iggimacool in the 7th.
Adelaide is a poor meeting but Alabama Missile ( mif the kid can sit on) is a pretty good hope in the 7th.

  4. Good luck Jock.
Probably worth mentioning that the Belmont will be on TV Sunday morning.

  5. Just a quick note on SANFL, Bays are on a “debt demolition” sounds familiar but did manage to beat Port at Alberton last week. Maybe if they keep winning the $$ will sort themselves out.

  6. wishful thinking mate. Bays have taken a lot for granted. The crowds are awful and the SANFL has to decide what they want to be…great comp, very good footy and, nowadays, buried by the boring/boorish AFL

  7. G’day Crio. We are heading up to Corowa. Early indications are heavy 8. I rang Albury to speak with my Uncle Frank yesterday. He said more rain was due, so hope the races are on.

Albury was pulled last Saturday, but Wagga ran on a heavy 10 on Tuesday. Touch wood today.
Oh, by the bye, I’ve worked out my Adam Bandt, Cathy McGowan double. They have to win now !

  8. Will be looking for pattern at Eagle Farm, look for some form reversals, particularly from those that get back.
Race 1 I thought was a chance to get off to a good start with some value, Royal Tithe given no hope last start and stuck on well. Looks value at $10. Although Ghisoni does look a moral, Amicus may improve at EF. Race 4 and Sold for Song won’t know herself at EF and looks good value at $11.
In the Derby I thought Eschiele would improve after no luck last 2 and EF should suit, Brazen great value at $31. Straddie…anything could win this! Vakue runners look to be Big Money (soft run from gate…$101), Delectation should appreciate EF and completely forget Hooked went around last start after J Byrnes bizarre rush of blood but drawn to get it tough again.
In the Oaks Dawnie Perfect and Provocative look the two and I think Ambience has been sacked a little quickly remembering she did have 6-7 weeks off coming in to that run and will no doubt improve from it.
    Good luck to all.

  9. cross-fingers that Eagle Farm races well. Brisbane needs today to be a big success (so do I!).

  10. Looks like the Straddy Day went well. The winner did seem well in at weights and track but I didn’t want to send good money after bad (declared Under The Louvre last start!).
    Nevertheless can’t complain.
Just one bet – layed Port on Betfair. This a week after the Bays win at Alberton. Fantastic.

  11. Looking now at results from Flemington – so pleased to see A.J.Vasil salute with General Truce . Tony’s had a tough time and is a top class horseman and trainer. This was, I think, his first runner as a trainer since Elite Elle several years ago. Good on him.

  12. Crio I wandered down Nicholson St yesterday, popped in to the TAB, filled out a multi super with the numbers for Cathy McGowan and Adam Bandt, put it in the machine, it went boop ! The lady said you can’t do those sort of bets. Hmmmmmm.

  13. Peter Fuller says

I was about to say confidently that you could get set with the corporates for your proposed double, but, no go there either. (I can only guess that there is some regulatory limit on the type of bet on elections, although the corps don’t seem especially restricted). Mind you, the odds for your double look like less than $1.16, so unless you regard them both as absolute certainties, that seems skinny to me.

  14. Ta Pete. I’m not a big better , but Bandt is a shoo in,and i loathe Panopolous so i’m hoping McGowan gets returned.

I need to have some interest in this election; gambling might do that for me.

I suppose whether you’re betting or voting you should be guided by the famous maxim of Jack Lang. ‘Follow self interest, at least it’s trying.’

  15. Reminder racelovers – Royal Ascot this week. The TV coverage is usually superb. The racing is top notch. Previews abound online.
