Almanac Racing – regrouping to counterattack

No wonder punters bray in victory and cuss in defeat. It’s a bloody tough pursuit, as I was reminded when I crossed the line from satchel swinging to selecting last Saturday at Morphettville. Talked out of backing Super One in the first Quaddy leg and then neglecting good mail for the last winner – at those points and all in between I experienced the lot of a desperate’s day-out. Morphettville’s a great venue (once I came to terms with the vacant acreages that were hives of activity in my youth) and, despite the smallish crowd, there’s still enough coat-tuggers and post-mortems to send your head in to a spin. Financially a wipeout, the day itself was terrific and the racing great – overshadowed for an eerily long time by the uncertainty following Luke Nolen’s sickening fall in the G1. We’ve all seen some shockers in our time, but this looked dire. Thank God he’ll be OK.

I thought this was an off-week for SA racing but the Derby’s actually pretty interesting (though I chuckled listening to old John O’Neill trying to get up the enthusiasm to spruik packages…”$99 includes a drink package and entertainment”!). There are four under double figures and you can make a real case for each of them. To me it is down to Weiry versus the red hot Mick Kent yard. Reckon Kent’s Charlevoix has the bigger upside to beat the impressive Howard Be Thy Name. Maybe take a running double with Duke of Brunswick (AR6 No10) in to the two favoured 3yr olds (AR7 Nos 1+6).

The best race this Saturday is up at Doomben – the old stomping ground of the mighty Chief De Beers – where the perennially-changing-titled BTC Cup (BR7, 1200m, WFA, G1) has attracted Fell Swoop, Japonisme, Counterattack, Malaguerra and co. How’d you like to own one like Fell Swoop? Never runs a bad race. Probably wins this.

Money’s also being splashed around at Scone where the main RNSW meeting is to be held this Saturday. There’s a lotta wealth in them thar hills and great incentives to turn up and win. Good fields. Beautiful track.

Less salubrious but still important to those in the Centre is the Tennant Creek Cup, run in conjunction with their St Patrick’s Cup in recent years.

I’m taking the weekend off so will be monitoring Caulfield and my phone from the terraces at Port Melbourne (VFL) and hoping for some inspiration to begin recovery from ‘Bool/M’ville week.

Good luck!

  1. theJudge says

Keen on Japonisme in BTC Cup & Duke of Brunswick in Adel.

  2. Grant Williams wasn’t happy that W Pike decided not to go to SA to ride Arcadia Dream. Must have some good rides in Perth (just for a change).

  3. G.Williams must be fed up with the visitor’s draw.
    Agree re Duke of Brunny

  4. I still think Arcadia Dream is a good hope, was the best run on for the day last week really motored the last 300 and they went home in 34 and a bit the last 600. I’m also on Duke of Brunswick and don’t leave out Rock Status in the last, it gets back but might be pretty good.
In Brissy, I like Artlee EW in the BTC Cup
In Melb I thought Moonovermanhattan was pretty good first up and might give it a try. There was a pest at the pub (acquaintance of the Budge) who kept declaring Petrology..gear change I think. If it wins I’m leaving town for a week.

  5. Good to see both Frankel and Sepoy both had their first winners overnight….another era begins!

    A few roughies today.

Agree with you Jock on Arcadia Dream, only thing that worries me is lack of pace in the race….may end up being one of those old fashioned Derbies where it’s a sprint home! Manhattan Boss looks silly odds at $41. Karacatis also value in the sprint at $21.

Up north in Bris and I thought Junoob and Opinion looked value in the JRA Cup in a race without depth. Echo Gal could be a knockout in BTC Cup, currently $51.

  6. While I’m tipping roughies, Slots has a chance in last Scone too I think….currently $34 fixed.

  7. while on roughies, Golden Buckleboo(16/1) in the 3rd in Adel. Has a lot of form around Victory Downs who is 4/1. This is on the inner track and taking a good position is a huge help and this one will be in the first 3.

  8. Jock, where will it be for the week then?….Bali? Hawaii?

  9. I can only afford a train to Seaford at this point but they can swoop home so maybe Rock Status can get me further afield.

  10. Black dog says

Jock you will be eating a lot of humble pie this week ! Probably escaping to Glenelg. Lol

  11. Black dog…at least blokes like Jock and Higgo have an opinion. Unlike us! See that the mighty Bays are back

  12. Silver lining…Blues beating Port
