Almanac Racing: a heavy calendar

Come Saturday morning I’ll likely be scanning the formguide and formulating a plan, but my Thursday night habit won’t get a look in this week…. there’s the always wonderful opening round of The Open (3.30pm tee off for FOX coverage), the first session of Lord’s (spiced up by the return of Mohammad Amir) and, of course, the Swannies and Hawks blockbuster.

It mightn’t be until Happy Hour on Friday that I can begin looking seriously at Caulfield’s options, doubtless giving extra weighting to those horses with D.K.Weir or C.Williams adjacent as they push towards local premierships.

Importantly I think I’ve already spotted my “getout” – a key strategy before digging for the ones that could place you in peril!

Last week I backed the Tassie horse in the first then bailed when it lost. The week before I backed an unlucky second early and then waited until the last for an E/W escape – it failed, but the run was a blackbooker so, despite the Rail out 10m, I’m definitely chasing with Vibrant Rouge (MR9, No1) at about 10/1.

The main race at The Heath is the Monash (MR8, 1100m, WFA, G3). It’s a pretty good and very open field but, if they can “close”, I’m all over the toppy, Fast ‘n Rocking first-up.

Any other suggestions?

Good luck!

  1. Early thoughts on Caulfield are that after watching Ulmann’s first up run is that Elvis may have suffered from premature declaration and it should get the chochy’s tomorrow.
The Caulfield rail position ( 10 metres) has got me a bit as normally you would expect that on pace is the go but they generally get wider later in the day so this is what I’ve come up with:
    Race 2 Lady Esprit
Race 6 Fast Approaching – Kav to actually get a winner
Race 8 Atmospherical- hoping run on is possible if not try Girl Guide
Gawler is difficult and it doesn’t normally hold too much water so track will still be rain affected despite pretty good weather since the antarctic blitz earlier this week
Try Race 5 Big Boy Blev
Race 8 Woolsthorpe Store- forgive last week
    Race 9 Alaskan Jade.

I’m loving the open- a few late nights coming up

  2. Ulmann carried me too…big effort.
Good luck Jock. Don’t die wondering!
