Almanac Racing: The pimple that is the Cup

The upside, I suppose, is that punters have no unreal expectations of great quality when they open the formguide for meetings this weekend (unless they’ve consulted the Winning Post calendar which is notoriously inaccurate).

We’re in limbo.

Randwick hosts a crap meeting with the massive $2m pimple of a Sydney Cup re-run as the obvious focus.

Other states have race names promoting upcoming features.

In fairness, there is blacktype on offer at Morphettville as the SAJC continues to baffle me by its fixturing.

Their final three race are notable. The R.N.Irwin (AR6, 1100m, WFA, G3) is a fading “time-honoured”.  The Auraria (AR7, 1800m, 3yoF, SWP, G3) is an obvious Oaks prelude. The Redelva (AR8, 1100m, 3yo, SWP, Listed) will excite Budge’s fading memory…but incite questions of why the old warrior is memorialised in a 3yo race?!

I’ll be at Caulfield. The prizemoney on offer there is extraordinary on their VOBIS Gold day (about $1.6m over the last 7 races). At least we can be confident they’ll be trying. Keen to get involved but nothing’s jumped off the page tonight (Wednesday).

Happy to bet but cautiously saving my bullets for the ‘Bool – only a fortnight away.

Let me know if you can help me build a bank for the marathon.

Good luck!

  1. I reckon his 3yo year was probably the only one he didn’t win a stakes race. Great horse Redelva.

  2. I’m not sure he even had a 3yo year, he was certainly a late starter maybe that’s why he was such a good horse over a period of time.

  3. No Jock. He actually won a VRC Maribynong Trial Stakes at 2 and I now see he won SAJC Lightning Stakes as a late 3yo. Won stakes races every year from 2 to 8 years old. A “poor man’s” Manikato.

  4. Raced on pace and was always thereabouts. What prizemoney would he accumulate today?
Looking at Caulfield. SWP lends to favs.

  5. Sorry Crio I don’t do Twitter. What’s SWP ?

  6. Set weights and penalties.

  7. Budge,
yes, I have some recollection of him being injured early and then coming back, the Lightning of course is the last meeting of the racing year so I’m done on almost a technicality but wwrrrong all the same.

SWP, I’ve got NFI waiting on Crio for translation

  8. WTF Jock, seriously i’m tired of acronyms. Like one of my exes used to say: WGAF ?!?

Not great fields. I’ve looked at the Winning Post but nothing jumping out. Luckily i worked last night so i saved my money on the Picnic racing grand finals at Cranbourne. Courtney Pace and Ray Douglas just didn’t do it last night. Congratulations to Grant Seccombe who completed a hat trick of wins in this event. No more picnics for 2016-17, but still plenty of races to invest in.

    Happy Punting.

    Glen!

  9. Down to business.
Vobis day is generally a favourites day because of the weight scale and Tycoon Tara looks a standout in race 6, the next best handicapped horse is Thermal Current who appears to be best at 1100, A Lotta Love is the danger if there is one. I like Kazio in the last and may risk Burning Front a bit earlier in the day just thinking he may be close to the end of the prep, maybe a little on Mr Individual who should sit on his outside through the run.
I’ve no interest in Sydney but Adelaide is a good program, note the rail is way out 10 metres 1200 to the post so it will be doubtful if they can run on and win in the shorter races although there was a fair bit of rain on Thursday which may also affect the pattern. I like Beautiful Flyer in the 4th, Illustrious Lad looks the goods in the 6th and I’ll be on Domesticated EW in the 7th
Bays are playing South at Noarlunga so no thoughts of going but hope the form continues.
