Almanac Poetry: ‘Tim’s Pain’ – Bill Wootton

Rough winds do shake the flanneled Aussie side.

It’s leaderless and Poms are on our shores.

Dick pic notwithstanding, Tim defied

mud slings – our reputation seemed restored.

The gloveman stepped up to the helm and kept

the worst of sledging from the field of play.

This week he faced up to the mic and wept

as he gave his cricket captaincy away.

Some wonder how he ever got the gig.

Sexting, even consensual, looks dodge

but was his misdemeanour all that big?

It’s not as if he was running for the Lodge.

Those cracks sandpapered over by the Tim

have opened up and now they’ve swallowed him
