Almanac Poetry: ‘the live sherrin’ – Bill Wootton

the live sherrin

leaps with latent energy

pops and darts

fizzes from fingers

until

the line is crossed

at which time it becomes

a dead thing

lolls

on its stitching

but back

on the live surface

it charges and spits

defies evenness

of bounce

attracts addicts

lures flesh

more of me more more

flick me kick me

punch me

celebrate my arc

land me

lace out

in soft hands

send me straight

between the big ones
