Almanac Poetry: Rossini’s Truffled Turkey

Rossini’s Truffled Turkey

Rossini said
there were only three times in his life when he cried:
one, when his first opera failed;
two, when with a boating party,
they lost a truffled turkey over the side
and, three, when he heard Paganini play.

It’s not too difficult to guess
over which event he shed the most tears.
He went on to write many successful operas,
must have heard brilliant musicians
on numerous occasions,
but the loss of a truffled turkey!
That would have made the great gourmet
want to write a requiem!
