Almanac Poetry: Lunch with Terrie and Bernadette

Lunch with Terrie and Bernadette

Carlton
— edgy, alternative theatre,
arty-farty Carlton —
ended in 1983,
around the time I lunched
with the actor and the dancer
in their rented house in Lygon Street.
At a table of Moroccan dips
and chicken wrapped in filo,
we talked in earnest about my play
and their recent show at La Mama,
unaware that the heart
of the world of the nearby streets
— for years, such an edgy,
alternative theatre,
arty-farty zone —
was arteriosclerotic,
or had thudded to a halt.
