Almanac Poetry: ‘Gerona Street Blues’ – Bill Wootton

Gerona Street Blues

Keilor a nothing suburb sprung

up on either side of the road

barely justifies its bitumen.

12 Gerona Street, behind

the Town Hall, can only

claim proximity to airport.

A backyard of bounceless grass.

Adjoining ‘carport’, sounding so

Jetsons, just lacks walled basics.

Flicker of Uncle Rex’s rolled shirtsleeve

reaching forward to top up his 7 oz glass

from a tall tan Abbot’s Lager soldier.

Black and white footy replay. The Tiges

grinding into the night. How

can Keilor time be the same

as school essay writing time?

Cavour v Bismarck: who’s

the finer statesman?
