Freud’s Famous Case Histories

Like all good detective stories,
clues are placed strategically
to maintain reader interest.
The narratives concerning Little Hans,
the Wolf Man, Dora, Irma,
are assembled like jigsaw puzzles,
the kind that curious minds
get excited by and rush to complete.
The placing of the final piece
in each separate puzzle
creates such a satisfying whole
that thus is the powerful impression:
this is the way it was,
this is why that person went nuts.

Yes, Freud’s famous case histories,
at heart, are quality fiction.
Compelling though they are, I know
life isn’t that simple.
