Almanac Poetry: Curriculum Vitae

Mayonnaise – often added to a CV to make it more ‘tasty’. [Source: Jules/WikiCommons.]

Curriculum Vitae

You know the CV thing,
when you don’t lie, but overstate
the importance of your achievements
– jobs, publications and the like
suddenly appear on paper
as more impressive than they really were?
My multi-talented friend
is a good example.
He put in a theatre program
that he had ‘worked in all mediums’.
All mediums?
It’s been a running joke between us since.
Yesterday I phoned him and said,
‘G’day, “worker-in-all-mediums”.
Done any equestrian statues today?’
I laughed and could hear
his half-hearted chuckle
on the other end of the line.

Magnificent work KD and spot on! I know all about this. Currently putting a CV together to try and re-enter the workforce. Had to put in a heap of ‘impressive’ stuff. Felt like I just needed to write: ‘Any takers for a deaf scribbler? Loves words, quick with numbers and a freakish memory.’

Thanks for your comments, DB! I’m so glad the poem resonated with you as it did.

CVs, Facebook posts about one’s own work, tweets about one’s latest book – broadly speaking, they’re all in the same (often annoying) ‘family’, I reckon.

    Magnificent.

Cheers, Dips. Thanks! (I think – but what does the question mark mean? I might be missing something.)
