Almanac Music: Vale – Lamont Dozier: Another music great gone
Lamont Dozier, one third of one of the greatest song writing and production teams ever, namely Holland, Dozier, Holland, has sadly has passed away.
Holland, Dozier, Holland were responsible for writing many hit songs for artists such as The Supremes, The Four Tops, Martha and The Vandellas during the golden age of the Motown sound in the 60s and 70s providing a soundtrack to our lives growing up.
Great songs such as; ‘Baby Love’, ‘Stop! In the Name of Love’, ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’, ‘Heatwave’, ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’, ‘Band of Gold’, ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’, ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’, and ‘Bernadette’ are just a few of the many number hits they wrote.
Many versions of their songs have been recorded over the years and the following are some of my favourites.
‘You Keep Me Hanging’ On’ – Vanilla Fudge
‘Baby, I Need Your Lovin’ – Johnny Rivers
‘It’s The Same Old Song’ – The Four Tops

Thanks for this, Col.
What a legacy HDH have left for us all. Some of the finest songs ever written.
My personal favourite is “I can’t help myself (sugar pie honey bunch)”.
If anyone is in any doubt as to their greatness, simply take a look at this list:

Excellent CR, HDH were a remarkable writing team, with maybe the highest strike rate of songwriters in the last 100 years. Your spotify playlist is a ripper. Did it include, Give Me Just A Little More Time” by Chairmen Of The Board; and “Band Of Gold” by Freda Payne? I’d squeeze both into HDH top 10 songs.
Band of Gold – Yes,Yes,Yes
Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you
Thanks Col. Much here I wasn’t aware of but, there again, you could say that about many other aspects of my life too. You know, the older you get the more you know you don’t know.
