Almanac Music: Vale Karl Wallinger – World Party

Songwriter Karl Wallinger, and front man for ‘World Party’ has passed away at the age of 66.

Wallinger is best known for his song ‘Ship Of Fools’ from the Private Revolution album and is one of my favourite songs from that era.

A multi-instrumentalist he was previously a member of The Waterboys and played on their first three albums including their biggest hit, ‘The Whole Of The Moon’.

Comments

  1. The hidden track on their Goodbye Jumbo album about the profiteering by Americans after the invasion of Kuwait is just gold as far as parody’s go.

A brilliant musician and an especially great lyricist. RIP.

Karl W’s contribution to the first 3 Waterboys albums and then World Party easily gives him a high distinction.
Strangely, a few months after Karl left The Waterboys, Dylan was In the UK and invited The Waterboys into the recording studio he was using at the time. During the visit, The Waterboys recorded an instrumental piece written by Dylan but never released …… until 3 weeks ago on a 5CD/96 track compilation album called ‘1985’. The track is on CD5 and called Meridian West.
    Meridian West
    Drums – Dave Ruffy*
    Fiddle – Steve Wickham
    Guitar – Mike Scott
    Piano – Guy Chambers
    Saxophone – Anthony Thistlethwaite
    Written-By – Bob Dylan

    Hey Col
A more direct Karl W/Bob D link is that on his debut World Party album – Private Revolution – he actually does a cover of Dylan’s ‘All I Really Want To Do’.
    Cheers, Karl
