Denny Freeman in the carpark at the Saxon Hotel, Austin Texas 2014

Denny Freeman was a well known musician who for many years was based and played around Austin, Texas passed away on 25 April aged 76.

Renowned for his guitar playing he was tapped on the shoulder by Bob Dylan to join his band and was Bob’s guitarist between 2004 to 2009.

Denny started his musical career playing with both Stevie Ray Vaughan and brother Jimmie Vaughan throughout the 70s and 80s. Later, he also played with Taj Mahal and his Phantom Blues Band playing guitar on on Taj’s Grammy Award winning live album, Shoutin’ in Key’.

Freeman was also an accomplished pianist and harmonica player and supported many well-known artists both in the studio and touring, Percy Sledge, James Cotton and many others.

I had the privilege of meeting Denny after a performance at the Saxon Hotel in Austin in 2014 along with some of my fellow New Orleans travellers. He was very gracious with his time speaking to some keen fans from Australia.
