Almanac Music: Vale – Dave Kimber

A few years back I published a number of stories about Dave Kimber, an American muso who spent the 1980s in Australia.

Dave was appointed to promote a new range of Yamaha keyboards in Australia, and with his incredible background in the music world he soon came to the attention of local musicians here. His musical skills were quickly in demand including his appointment as musical director for a number of live TV shows.

I first met Dave through my sister Jude and her husband Dallas. Dallas then also worked in the music industry and played in bands and before long their paths crossed to become lifelong friends and playing in bands together. Sadly Dave passed away last week.

Sammy Davis Jnr, Frank Zappa, Sammy Davis Jnr, and DK.

Dave had an amazing career meeting and playing with the world’s best as his many stories highlight. Take some time out and check out these fascinating stories of Dave growing up in California, becoming a musician, and meeting and playing with some incredible people over the years.

Please enjoy this clip of Renee Geyer singing ‘Dock of the Bay’ live on The Late Nite Show with Jono and Dano. Dave was the musical director for the program and he can be seen playing keyboards in the short sleeved shirt in this clip with Renee Geyer.

Fabulous, Colin. Especially the marvellous Renee Geyer clip and the whistling at the finish is just magnificent. How wonderful to have been part of that lineup.

  2. Karl Dubravs Karl Dubravs says

    Thanks for the article Colin.
One musical credit that seems to have slipped through the cracks was Dave playing keyboard & synthesiser on Austen Tayshus’s 1986 ‘The Pope Downunder’. The video that promoted the song has Dave in a cameo role playing a melodica.
His smile is very infectious – in the nicest kind of way.

  3. Barry Nicholls says

    Great tribute Col.
    What a life!
