Almanac Music: The Beatles – Concert tour of Australia 1964

It is hard to believe The Beatles toured Australia sixty years ago!

Many reading this post were not born then but I was a fourteen year old teenager at the time and remember it well.

The music of The Beatles captured Australia by storm sweeping everyone up in ‘Beatlemania’ ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’, as it did worldwide, with hit after hit of memorable songs. Their music changed the world of music at a time when society was finally coming out of the doldrums of the aftermath of the Second World War.

In 1964 The Beatles toured Australia creating unprecedented scenes of love, adoration, and hysteria wherever they went.

I remember well watching the news and TV specials at the time highlighting the tour and the music of the group. It was magical and life changing!

To celebrate the anniversary of their tour, new, cleaned up film from the time is now available for everyone to relive that incredible time, and for others to discover what all the fuss was about.

Comments

  1. Good one, Col.

My mum and dad were there.
My dad’s mate Brent jumped onto the stage and shook John Lennon’s hand.

  2. Colin Ritchie says

Wow, that’s incredible Smokie! Does Brent show up in the clip?

  3. I haven’t looked closely at the one you have posted, Col.
But I assume so, as I have seen the vision of Brent on stage in the past.
Lennon initially shaped up to him as if preparing for a stoush!
As I have written about previously, my dad jumped the fence at Essendon airport and leapt onto Ringo’s car.
They had a very big few days!!

  4. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

That must be Brent right at the end Smokie.

  5. Barry Nicholls says

60 years! I’ve a book on 64 tour All those screaming teenyboppers now at least in their mid 70s!

  6. Gareth Meyer says

If you hadn’t noticed my earlier post Col, a friend and I have put together an expansive podcast on the tour but also the wider social and cultural environment in Australia in that period. Our want it to be part fun, nostalgic, serious and informative. It’s sprawling like the white album in styles and coverage!
