Almanac Music: ‘Shangri La’ – The Kinks
The Kinks are perhaps the quintessential English pop group.
Their songs reflect very much the England of the 50s and 60s where finally the country was exiting from the shadows of the Second World War, prosperity was an ideal to aspire to, and life undoubtably was getting better.
Their music hit a core with the youth of the day. Ray Davies, a gifted observer and chronicler of society and its mores in this time of change, spoke from the perspective of a new generation with his songs, and the fans readily identified with the tunes, and they loved it.
In the late 60s and early 70s The Kinks produced a number of theme related albums reflecting English life, and from Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire, ‘Shangri La’, is truly one of the great songs from Ray Davies and The Kinks.
