Almanac Music: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

With the death of Mike Nesmith this week I was reminded of one of his songs recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for their album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy, ‘Some of Shelly’s Blues’.

And of course, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band are best known for their cracking version of the classic Jerry Jeff Walker song ‘Mr Bojangles’

But it was their collaboration on Will the Circle be Unbroken with some of country music’s most respected musicians and performers that introduced country music to a wider audience as a forerunner to the Country/Rock genre, and later Americana that really cemented the band’s fame.

Here is a live, rough and ready recording of ‘Will the Circle be Unbroken’ from a club in Texas.

  2. Great stuff!

I managed to finally nab a vinyl copy of Will The Circle Be Unbroken after searching records stores for a very long time (discogs and eBay can get back in the sea). An amazing meeting of old and new worlds of country and bluegrass captured perfectly.
