Almanac Music: ‘Lakes of Ponchartrain’ – The Be Good Tanyas

The Be Good Tanyas are a Canadian folk group formed in the late 90s.

Like most of my introductions to new music, my appreciation of The Be Good Tanyas came about through listening to Brian Wise on his weekly radio program on 3RRR, ‘Off The Record’. I was very much taken by their harmonies, and their old timey feel to their music, and in particular, their interpretation of an old folk song from the early 1800s, ‘Lakes of Ponchartrain’ from their first album Blue Horse.

My first exposure to this song was Paul Brady – Transatlantic sessions Vol3. I tried to copy the link, without success. Enjoyed the musicianship of TBGT but not the vocals. Interesting discovery though, as I’ve had a couple and it took a while to establish that it was the same song.
