Almanac Music: Drive-By-Truckers and Booker T Jones
This time, thirteen years ago, at The Prince of Wales, St Kilda, the Drive-By-Truckers performed and absolutely blew me away! And, my ears were ringing for days afterwards, they are the loudest band I have ever heard, but the music was sensational.
With Booker T Jones (of ‘Time is Tight’ and ‘Green Onions’ fame) as the support act proved to be an added bonus for a night to remember; and what a class act to have as a support, one of the all time greats! His Hammond organ sounded immense. Both artists supported one another during their sets.
Being vertically challenged I decided the front of the stage was the place to be to gain a decent view, and I wasn’t disappointed, an unchallenged close-up view to all the action was something I was not accustomed to. I could have even touched Patterson Hood’s shoes while he laid on his back at the edge of the stage during a guitar solo! I thought the better of it though.
Enjoy the DBT’s on one of my favourite songs by them, ‘Self Destructive Zones’.
Below are two clips from 2009, the year DBT and BTJ toured Australia, the second clip live from BluesFest in Byron Bay
Patrick Donovan from The Age wrote this preview of the concert at the time.
Please enjoy some Spotify playlists for both DBT and BT.

What a great gig this sounds, Col. Never would have thought of the admixture. Time is tight used so often to be used to lead up to the news on the hour on 3AK or 3XY so we seldom heard the end. Sensational version of Green Onions. Moonlight Mile also fantastic. Have you heard Jason Isbell do Somebody loan me a dime? Gets towards Duane Allman.
Nailed it CR, we were there and man, what a show. The Donovan article is a good link and another reminder of how much musicians work together regardless of genres they might be known for.
