Forget shameless plugs this is a must see gig to catch an exceptional rocknroll artist. And Warner’s also an Almanacer!
If you can, get on down to St Kilda on Saturday night to see Warner and the original Mug’s Game band rock it out.

Up in the mornin’, out on the job
Work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old sun has nothin’ to do
But roll around Heaven all day

Somewhere I still have a Warner live recording on cassette from about 1978. It’s gold. Super extended version of Half Time. Pity I no longer have anything to play it on.
Pretty sure that’s the Live at the Vic hotel cassette. If so, it’s on Spotify so yes, you can still listen to it!
“we’re bored and adored and ignored by the sweetie
pulling beers for the Oz Rock and Roll Industry”
Truly sums up the experience of most young men in the big bad world of rock, and of those young women who became bartenders…
And a great night it was, Dave still too hip for the straights, too straight for the hips. My mate Murph and I first saw this band in 78 or 79 at Melbourne Uni – we relived that experience some 45 years later on Saturday night. Thanks to Paul Noonan for alerting me to the gig – he was great on bass and thoroughly enjoying himself. Mugs game affiicanados will be pleased to learn by 2023 that Zongo has made a fortune out of coastal property development and Derek, despite a 3 year spell on Correction Island, remains sleazy.
Hi George, sorry I didn’t reply earlier. Love the song and what a piercingly accurate account of pub rock of the era. So many ripper lines, like “clowns who toss coasters” and “hope in the scrote of a barren old pea”. The gig was as expected, a riper!
Yes Mark, it was a ripper.
While loving the show and thinking about Warner’s remarkable career writing crime novels (still have to read Summer of Blood) I can’t but speculate on what Aus rock lost without the presence of such an imagination and talent. His updates (esp in Mug’s Game) were bang on and very funny. I did wonder why he left out “and I couldn’t do the Disco Duck” line. Still laugh every time I hear it.
Cheers
