Almanac Music: A cold, wet afternoon with Iris DeMent

It’s a cold and wet Thursday afternoon in Colac, a good day for kicking back and listening to some good music.

And what better way to do that than listening to Iris DeMent.

I’ve always been a great fan of Iris DeMent ever since I first saw her perform at Bluesfest in Byron Bay in the late 90s. I’ve previously published a couple of pieces on the Footy Almanac site in appreciation of  her music Here  and Here.   Trevor Blainey in one of his  ‘Not Quite Bob’ pieces incorporated a section featuring Iris as well which you can read Here.

As the rain continues to tumble down I’m really enjoying listening to some of her more recent songs especially from the Workin’ On A World album, and in particular a song called ‘The Sacred Now’ which is now on repeat. Please have a listen to the song below on the You Tube clip, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I do.

For your further pleasure and delight I’ve added the complete Spotify Iris DeMent playlist. I cannot think of a better way to be spending a wet afternoon than listening to the wonderful music of Iris DeMent.

As an old Winchelsea boy Col, I am tempted to taunt with the old “oh it’s always bloody raining in Colac” joke..

But I won’t. Kinda. And I’ll explore the music. Thanks.

Thanks for this CR, love Iris. I’ve jumped into the huge Spotify playlist you included so ta. New record is a gem. Hardly a dud song but special mention to I Won’t Ask You Why and Waycross Georgia, along with your fave, The Sacred Now. Cheers
