Almanac (Local) Cricket: Pomborneit Cricket Club 2021/22 Season – Pre-Season Review

Welcome to our 2021/22 pre-season review, featuring all the news and happenings at the Pomborneit Cricket Club over another busy off-season, published with many thanks to John Harms and the team at footyalmanac.com.au.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The club held it’s Annual General Meeting on the 11th of July, back at the clubrooms this year after the 2020 AGM was held via Zoom. The committee was re-elected unchanged for a third consecutive season, with David Murphy returning as President for a fourth season in this term and eighth overall, Luke Reynolds as Secretary for a fourth year in this term and twentieth year all up, Julie Whytcross as Treasurer for a fourth season, Matthew Richardson as Vice President for a fourth season and Patrick Johnstone as Junior Vice President for a third season.

CAPTAINCY APPOINTMENTS-

Division 1 Men- Grant Place was reappointed as Division 1 skipper for a fourth season. Three premierships and two Twenty20 titles in his first three seasons in charge made it an easy decision for the committee to entrust Grant with the role again in 2021/22.

Division 1 Women- The club was thrilled to announce Samantha LaFranchi as our new Pomborneit Women’s team captain. Sam had an exceptional first season with the club in 2020/21, topping the batting aggregate for both the club and the association, as well as becoming our inaugural women’s team champion and the Colac District Cricket Association inaugural women’s MVP.

Division 2 Men- Matthew Richardson takes over as captain for the upcoming season. ‘Richo’ has led the Division 3 Bulls for the past two seasons, including the 2019/20 premiership and a semi-final appearance in 2020/21. The club is thrilled to see him step up and take charge of our young team in our third season back at Division 2 level.

Division 2 Women- Julie Baud has joined the club to captain our second women’s team. While not having played for several years, Julie has plenty of cricket experience including 6 seasons at the Melbourne University Women’s CC, two years at the Williamstown CC and even lined up against the great Belinda Clark in a game against Sydney University.

Division 3 Men- Tony Evans, a 353 game veteran for the club, is our new Division 3 skipper. Tony is a two time Pomborneit premiership player (for Pomborneit Gold in 1989/90 & the 2019/20 Division 3 team) and has previously captained in 1987/88 (Pomborneit Green), 2000/01 (Division 3) and 2002/03-2003/04 (Division 2). Hugely respected by the playing group, Tony’s experience and leadership will be a great asset for the Division 3 Bulls.

JUNIOR CRICKET

Our junior numbers continue to be strong, with our junior girls program expanding to have two teams in 2021/22, the club now fielding a record 10 teams. Our Under 13 boys will again be fielding two teams while our Under 16 boys look sharp after a longer than normal pre-season.

RIP THE PAVILION END SIGHTSCREEN (1981-2021)

The recent storm event devastated local power supplies and many a tree, but at the PCC we are mourning the loss of the pavilion end sightscreen. It, and it’s Pomborneit end counterpart were erected in 1981 and had until now looked unmoveable. A quiet ceremony to mark the end of an era was held under Covid protocols with close club members and selected angle grinders.

THE PCC MONOGRAM BECOMES OFFICIAL

Last season the club was thrilled to return the PCC monogram, based on the one used from at least the 1930’s, possibly earlier, until the 1960’s, to our playing caps and most club uniforms. As seen at the top of the page, it has now been adopted as the official club logo. The Bulls logo will also continue to be used, though the PCC monogram now well suits us as a club that proudly honours it’s history while at the same time being bold and progressive.

The PCC monogram modelled by club legends Jim Rippon and Jim Parsons many years ago

Comments

  1. Luke, great to see the Pombo Bulls back on the Almanac. Best of luck to all of your teams for the new season!

  2. Great work ex skipper.
The sponsors list is huge, bigger than some AFL clubs, the corporate boxes should be full.

  3. Good luck for the season to Pombo

  4. Mark Poustie says

    Luke,
An inspired idea to return to the traditional monogram and Pombo has a sponsors list the envy of any grassroots cricket club. I assume you were rained out today, but good luck to all your men, women, boys and girls for season 2021/2.
