Pomborneit’s Division 1 team has made it two wins from two with a commanding 8 wicket win over Ecklin at MCP Oval. The visitors won the toss and batted first. After an early wicket to Brad Hillman the Ecklin team steadied, taking the score to 57 before spinners Tharaka Sendanayake and Matt Bignell broke through, the Bulls then taking consistent wickets right through to dismiss Ecklin for 151 in the 43rd over, with two wickets each to Hillman, Sendanayake, Bignell and Lahiru Fernando. Pomborneit made light work of the run chase, passing Ecklin’s score in 19.3 overs for the loss of two wickets. Openers Dave Murphy (64 from 45 balls) and Lahiru Fernando (33 from 28) got the team off to a flying start, with Grant Place (40 not out) and Sendanayake (16 not out) at the crease when the winning runs were scored.
The Division 2 Bulls started their season with a five wicket loss at Ecklin. Batting first, Pomborneit slumped to 6/70 before a 72 run partnership for the 7th wicket between Luke Reynolds and Sam Whytcross helped put a competitive total on board. Reynolds made 63 and Whytcross 37 as the team finished on 8/153 from their 40 overs. Max Rees, on senior debut, took the new ball and impressed with 1/14 from 5 overs, but despite 3 wickets to Brady Bernoth and one to Josh Reynolds, the home team passed the score in the 34th over five wickets down.
Pomborneit’s Division 3 team travelled to Woorndoo, the home team batted first, making 7/143. Veteran Tony Evans was miserly with 4/10 from 8 overs while another senior debutante, Marc Van Es, bowled well in taking 1/21 from 5 overs. In reply the Bulls fell short, all out for 118, brothers Levi Cootesmith (33) and Isaac Cootesmith (22) top scoring.
The Pomborneit Gold women started their season with a thumping win over Irrewarra at MCP Oval. Top four batters Tayla Reynolds, Nellie Sadler, Samantha Coxon and Jess Moulden all hit the 30 retired mark, while Rachel Dendle finished on 26 not out as Gold made an imposing 0/197 from their 20 overs. Skipper Sam Coxon ripped through the visitors top order, taking 3/4 from 2 overs, Tayla Reynolds took 2/6 from 2 overs, with wickets to Rachel Dendle and Jess Moulden as Irrewarra were dismissed for 27.
Pomborneit Maroon bowled first at Simpson, the home team making 2/86 from their 20 overs, Emily Norman taking both wickets while junior players Lilli Saarikallio and Isabella Wain impressed in their 4 over spells. Maroon fell 11 runs short in the reply despite a hard hitting 30 retired from 46 balls to Emily Norman.
Pomborneit’s Under 17 boys have scored their first win of the season with a big win over City United at MCP Oval on Tuesday. A strong bowling and fielding performance saw the visitors dismissed for 40, with the wickets being shared. In reply the junior Bulls made 7/209 from their 30 overs, openers Ben Whytcross (40 retired) and Ollie Delaney (21 retired) reached the 30 ball mark, while Gavin Reynolds with 52 and George Sadler with 31 batted well.
The Pomborneit Gold Under 17 girls started their season with a win over Irrewarra at MCP Oval on Sunday. Batting first, Gold made 4/121 from their 20 overs, openers Neave Thompson and Lucia Clarke both reached the 30 retired mark. Irrewarra batted well in reply but fell short, making 3/92 from their 20 overs, Lucia Clarke, Isla Nolan and Neave Thompson taking a wicket each. The Pomborneit Maroon Under 17 girls had the bye.
The Under 16 boys scheduled game against Heytesbury/Princetown at Timboon was postponed due to the home team not being able to get up a team on Sunday.
The Under 14 boys started their season with a 16 run win over Stoneyford at Pirron Yallock last Friday. Ollie Rahles-Rahbula top scored with 16 not out in Pomborneit’s total of 3/108, while opening bowlers Bailey Fox (1/6 from 3 overs) and Hugo Saarikallio (2/10 from 3 overs) impressed as the junior Bulls restricted Stoneyford to 9/82 from their 30 overs.
The Under 13 boys started their season with a 57 run loss to reigning premiers Cobden at Cobden on Monday night, the Pomborneit team containing six club debutantes in Lucas Place, Coby Cummins-Gray, Basil Hunt, Jerry Wain, Jamie Gardiner and Hamish Christensen. Pomborneit’s Under 13 girls team start their season this Sunday.
The club held its first function of the season on Saturday night with a sports challenge night, including golf, basketball and beer pong, a great night, thanks to Paul Dunn and the social committee for organising.
This week’s games see Division 1 play Heytesbury/Princetown at Timboon, Division 2 host Cobden in the return of sport to the South Purrumbete Recreation Reserve, Division 3 host Heytesbury/Princetown Purple at MCP Oval, Pomborneit Gold women play Tomahawk Creek at Irrewillipe, the Pomborneit Maroon women host Carlisle River at MCP Oval, the Under 17 boys play West Warrion at the Western Reserve, Pomborneit Gold Under 17 girls play Tomahawk Creek at Irrewillipe, Pomborneit Maroon Under 17 girls play Bookaar at MCP Oval, the Under 16 boys play Bookaar at South Purrumbete, the Under 14 boys play Irrewarra Red at CSC Oval and the Under 13 girls start their season against Colac at CMTP Oval.
