Almanac Horseracing: #AusJumpsRacingPreviews – Casterton, Sunday 29 June 2025

Jumps racing heads back to the very picturesque course at Casterton on Sunday where in the steeplechase the horses jump the live hedge obstacles and race caller Ric McIntosh is sure to rise to the occasion as he always does at Casterton.

Acceptances in the programmed jumps races were very light on for this meeting, disappointingly for the Club, but there is a feature jumps meeting programmed at Warrnambool on Sunday week, 6 July.

Race 1 – E-cycle Solutions Maiden Hurdle 3500m @ 12.20pm

10 Raise The Note comes back to hurdles here after running in the Maiden Steeplechase at Terang recently, where things just didn’t seem to pan out for her at all in the race. She raced tight at times and was very awkwardly placed for a large part of the race. Tom Ryan goes back aboard here and around this tight course at Casterton I’d be thinking he won’t let them get to far in front of her in the run and he’ll do his best to ensure she has room to build into the race over the last 1000m from her inside barrier.  She started odds on here at the last meeting in a Maiden Hurdle when she found one better in Cool King. I don’t really want to be taking odds on about her, but think she wins. 3 Flood And Fire has trialed up well for his debut here over hurdles and with Steven Pateman taking the ride will be the hardest to beat from another making his debut here in 4 Golden Garden. As I’ve said previously, in my opinion they have to be pretty smart to win first race start over jumps, and the previous race experience here also assists 10 Raise The Note.

Race 2 – bet365 BM120 Hurdle 3500m @ 1pm

3 Enchanted Elle looks a good thing. She jumped like a gazelle here last start and ran her rivals ragged. She faces more seasoned jumpers here, but the Wilde stable enjoy plenty of success at Casterton and with Will Gordon in the saddle that success will continue. 4 Gambu showed some promise over hurdles last season and won a recent 2400m hurdle trial at Traralgon. He could make his presence felt here in the small field and 1 Bazini back to the hurdles can run into the placings for the Wilde stable but I think he’ll find his stable mate too good. An ex-Wilde horse in 5 Chimed gets in very well at the weights with the claim for David Mulcahy and is an interesting runner here after winning a recent steeplechase trial at Terang.

3 Enchanted Elle, kept fresh after her last start win here at Casterton, only has to run up to that performance to have these covered.

Race 3 – WC & AC Miller Steeplechase 3800m @ 1.40pm

2 The Mighty Spar likes this course having won around it twice and comes here off back to back wins carrying 71kgs around this course and then at Terang carrying 73kgs. Meets 3 Carnamah 1kg worse off at the weights for beating him by 1.75 lengths at Terang. 2 The Mighty Spar has shown he can carry weights and even though he’s further up in the weights here I think he can go on his winning way from 1 Count Zero who has to carry the topweight of 75.5kgs here but is a proven jumper and stayer. 5 Pressfal has shown ability over hurdles but makes his steeplechase debut here and with no weight on his back in comparison to the top 2 he wouldn’t totally surprise me. The other runners, some of whom have shown they race well at Casterton, have had plenty of chances.
