Almanac Footy: ‘Who am I?’

Who am I?

I sat next to a woman at John Craven’s book launch a couple of weeks ago and of course we started chatting football and she began telling me of her relationship to the Fitzroy Football Club and her father.

Well, not telling me, but jotting down some notes. I misplaced them and only found them today. Unfortunately I did not get her name and the story will have to be written by Ms ‘X’.

“My father grew up in Alphington and played for Northcote with Doug Nicholls.  They both went to Fitzroy, Doug initially with Carlton (and we know that story!).

Dad played in the Fitzroy Reserves and a practice match for the Firsts. At the same time he had been appointed as an industrial chemist at Broadford Paper Mill.

He moved to Broadford.  Fitzroy wanted him back and they arranged a job at the Fitzroy Council for him on a ‘night cart’!

He said “no, I haven’t done six years of night school for that!”

He went on to play for Broadford and then was president of Waranga North East Football League for many years.

In Doug Nicholls final years Dad regularly visited him in a nursing home in Kilsyth.

He knew all of the players in the Fitzroy premiership team and some of the surviving past players brought the premiership flags to his funeral in 2006″.

I am planning to write a story about him for The Footy Almanac one day.  Many other very entertaining stories about him I will write about.

These are the notes Ms ‘X’ gave to me about her dad.  I hope she reads this in the Almanac and gets to work writing some stories about him.  No doubt his name will be remembered by some of our readers as well.    ‘Citrus Bob’

  1. Roger Lowrey might be your best bet, Citrus.
He did a lot of the organising for the lunch.
