Almanac Footy: Western District Football Wrap 26/5
Hampden FNL
The game of the round saw top team North Warrnambool maintain their undefeated status against Koroit with the Eagles at home winning 13-13-91 to 10-11-71. The Eagles led all day and their goals were evenly shared with nine goal kickers and four players kicking two goals each, including veteran Joe Higgins who was also named in the best players. Best player for the Eagles was another veteran, Matthew Wines.
Sam Dobson continued his good recent form with another five goals showing he’s lost none of the form that saw him be a very good player with St Mary’s in the Geelong FNL and also play VFL with Geelong before returning home to Koroit as a joint coach this season. Better players for Koroit were Dallas Mooney and Liam Hoy. Dobson has now kicked five goals in each of the last three games and a total of 18 in his seven games for the season.
Portland journeyed to Camperdown and returned to the winners list with a 21 point victory, 10-12-72 to 7-9-51. Experienced (ex VFL players) Jake Wilson and Tom Sharp both kicked three goals for the Tigers whilst young Charlie Piergrosse was named best player. Toby Oakley in for his first senior game of the season was also named in the best players. Best player for Camperdown was Harry Sumner who continued his consistent form this season which has seen him in the best players in six of seven games.
Reigning premiers South Warrnambool journeyed to Hamilton to take on the Hamilton Kangaroos and ran out 29 point winners, 10-9-69 to 6-4-40. South were in control all day and a scoreless first quarter certainly didn’t help the Kangaroos. VFL listed player, Archie Stevens (Carlton), showed his class and was named best player for South along with Harry Lee. Experienced ruckman, Levi Dare, was best player for the Kangaroos along with young midfielder, Rory Gill. The Kangaroos had two sons of past Hamilton Imperials and Hamilton player Wayne Riddle join the team on the weekend for the first of two games with the Club. Brothers, Jed and Mackenzie Riddle, who are regular players with Labrador in the QAFL are in Hamilton for family reasons and were provided the opportunity to play with the club.
Jarrod O’Brien, who started the season as coach of Casterton Sandford in the Limestone Coast FNL, also returned to the Kangaroos on Saturday for his first game with the club this season.
The Hamilton Kangaroos will be hosting a past players day this coming weekend and also celebrating a number of premierships with a reunion at Melville Oval this coming Saturday.
Elsewhere Warrnambool at home continued their good form defeating Cobden, 14-10-94 to 12-8-80 with Luke Cody again dominating, kicking nine goals for the Blues and being named best player whilst Gus Walsh was named best player for Cobden. And Terang Mortlake at home continued Port Fairy’s tough season with a 28 point defeat, 14-10-94 to 9-12-66. Zeke Reeves kicked four goals for the home side. Mitchell Ryan was named best player for Port Fairy, whilst gun recruit, Gary Rohan, didn’t play.
After seven rounds North Warrnambool sit clear on top of the ladder undefeated from South Warrnambool one game behind. Cobden are yet to win a game this season. Warrnambool small forward, Luke Cody, leads the goal kicking with 30 goals.
South West District FNL
Top team Cavendish continued on their winning way demolishing Heathmere, 18-21-129 to 3-5-23. Amazingly twenty of the twenty one players kicked a goal for the victors, with last rounds leading goal kicker for the Bloods, Jayden Hendry, being the odd man out on Saturday. And they say a week (well two, due to inter-league) is a long time in football! Jon Coghlan was named best player for Cavendish, whilst Blake Schwarz was named best player for Heathmere.
Branxholme Wallacedale couldn’t claim a big scalp and Dartmoor stamped their authority with a 68 point hammering at home, winning 17-11-113 to 6-9-45. Veteran, Jordan Murphy, kicked four goals for Dartmoor, whilst Jason McVilly and new recruit Lachie Glare were named best players. Glare was playing his first game for the Club after crossing over from Mininera & District FNL club, Hawkesdale Macarthur, where he has previously played, including in the early rounds this season. Branxholme Wallacedale boom recruit, Brandon Newton, was again named their best player.
Heywood at home got back onto the winners list defeating Westerns 11-8-74 to 10-8-68. Best players were the experienced Troy Lovett and the 16 year old, Jensen Moore. Jed Lucas was named best player for Westerns who have been disappointing so far this season after playing finals in 2024. Former Gold Coast Suns junior and QAFL player, Liam Rutledge, played his first game for Westerns on the weekend.
Coleraine at home continued on their winning way defeating Tyrendarra 7-17-59 to 7-9-51. Best players for Coleraine were the Youngman brothers, Charlie and Sam, whilst best player for the visitors was Josh Atwell.
Game of the round next weekend see’s undefeated top team Cavendish at home take on the second placed team, Coleraine.
Mininera & District FNL
Wickliffe Lake Bolac celebrating 150 years of the Lake Bolac Football Club and a number of premierships with a reunion on Saturday, enjoyed a win at home with a 13 point victory over SMW Rovers. Liam Zavaglia kicked five goals for the victors and Lewis Crichton was named best player, whilst Fraser Hunt was named best player for Rovers.
Top team Ararat Eagles at home demolished Caramut, 19-16-130 to 0-3-3. Jack Wilson kicked four goals for the Eagles and Sam Summers and Ben Robertson were named best players. Robertson has been in good form this season being named in the team’s best players in four of his six games. Best players for Caramut were Mark Lehmann and Jarvis Bermingham. Caramut appear to have been at full strength utilising 48 of their allocated 50 player points on the weekend.
Lismore Derrinallum continued their good form at home with a 73 point victory over Glenthompson Dunkeld, 14-11-95 to 3-4-22. League leading goal kicker Lachie Constable continued his good form with 6 goals taking his tally for the season to 31 from six games. Max McIntosh and Josh Sanders were named best players, whilst for Glenthompson Dunkeld, DJ Woods and the ever reliable Tyler Staude were named best players.
Woorndoo Mortlake bounced back onto the winners list with a 48 point win at home over Moyston Willaura, 15-19-109 to 9-9-63. Recruit Zackary Lubeek playing his first game with the club kicked 6 goals and was named in the best players. Lubeek had played with Avoca in the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL for six games this year before the weekend. He has previously played in the Ballarat FL. Jack Richie was named best player for the home side, whilst Riley Van Dyke was named best player for Moyston Willaura.
In the remaining games Penshurst at home defeated arch rival Tatyoon 14-13-97 to 9-9-63 with key forward and reigning League Best and Fairest, Josh Rentsch, kicking 5 goals and being named with Aaron Glare as the teams best players whilst Jack Fraser was named best player for Tatyoon; and Hawkesdale Macarthur at home were too good for Great Western, 15-18-108 to 6-7-43. Benjamin Reid kicked four goals and was named best player for the home team and Tom Randone continued his good form this season and was named best player for the visitors.
Ararat Eagles sit on top of the ladder undefeated, one game clear of Lismore Derrinallum with the two teams scheduled to clash only once during the home and away season, in round 10.

Not sure what I was thinking regarding the Cavendish game last weekend. Obviously with 18 goals in total 20 players couldn’t have kicked a goal, even though that is what is shown on PlayHQ. I’ll dig into this a bit further.
