Almanac (Footy) Poetry: ‘Opportunity’ – Bill Wootton

Opportunity

Trace an outline

of a figure

all around

from top to toe

Now see

the space defined

by removing

that figure

Imagine that space

the negative space

pressing

on the figure

The figure is on

a football field

It is 1995

ANZAC Day

Scores all tied up

seconds to play

the figure

bursts through the centre

takes a bounce

sizes up the situation

Any score will win the game

90+, 000 fans roar

One more bounce

and he has a clear shot

Instead he passes

to Rocca in the square

Two men on him

Ball spills

Essendon clear

Siren sounds

Space

closes

over
