Almanac Footy: North Melbourne’s best 23 in 2025
North Melbourne Football Club’s best 23 in 2025 by Philip Mendes and Lucas Lewit-Mendes
Below is our projected best 23 squad for 2025. The squad includes three new players added via trades: Parker, Darling, and Daniel.
We believe the North squad of 2025 is far stronger than the North squad of 2024 for multiple reasons.
Firstly, the addition of the three senior players from other clubs gives North big-bodied, experienced footballers who can provide physical support and tactical guidance to aid the development of younger talent. Their presence, alongside established topliners such as LDU, Simpkin and Larkey, should give North’s young A grade and budding A grade talent more time and space to execute their skills.
Secondly, North’s star youngsters are now a year older. Sheezel (already an elite player) and Wardlaw are in their third seasons, McKercher and Duursma are playing their second, and Powell is commencing his fifth. Their level of composure and confidence should rise considerably.
Thirdly, for the first time since the 2015-2016 heyday of Jarrad Waite, Drew Petrie, Robbie Tarrant, Scott Thompson and Todd Goldstein, North has a talented group of talls: Xerri was an All-Australian squad member in 2024, Larkey made the All-Australian team in 2023, Comben could achieve that level this year, and Logue, Corr and Darling provide solid support.
Finally, North now has decent alternative players to fill slots when players are injured and out of form. Most of the players on the fringe of the top 23 are young improving footballers, not players who have been tried and failed as was often the case over the past five years.
