Bob Gartland has spent a lifetime as a passionate supporter of the Geelong Football Club and a fair share of that lifetime as its historian. Along the way he has built a collection of artifacts, photos, trophies, footballs, papers, books, memorabilia, merchandise, newspapers, art and anything you can think of from old membership tickets to club umbrellas.
As he collected, he also started researching stories of everything to do with the history of the Geelong Football Club.
Eventually, the academic world came to hold his thorough research and his instructive and insightful writing in the highest regard.
In this piece, published in The International Journal of the History of Sport, he has teamed up with Deakin Uni History lecturer, researcher and writer, Tony Joel, to look at the life of one of football’s finest administrators: Charles Brownlow. The AFL’s medal is named in his honour.
