Almanac Footy: Eight things I like about Freo

EIGHT THINGS I LIKE ABOUT FREO

I took in the Pies versus Dockers game last week with the intent of acknowledging what I like most about the western seaboard club.  I have been impressed with them this year despite the team receiving very few commendations from the eastern journos.

They came away with a good win and the eight things I liked about them are:-

One. The jumper.  Real fair dinkum Aussie rules guernsey. The bluey purple and the white chevrons. It is all class

Two. The coach.   Justin Longmuir is the master of the ship and steers the crew with a style that is calm and obviously very methodical. A huge future in the game.

Three. The ancient mariner –  David Mundy. The near 36 year-old is defying logic and is playing superb football.  Do his astronomical studies help his game?

Four. The skipper – Nathan Fyfe. Captains the crew with aplomb but realises that when he is on shore-leave they have the ability to hoist the victory sails.

Five. The helmsman – Rory Lobb.  Has now reached his potential and has become very dangerous up forward. Now taking marks and kicking goals.

Six. The midshipman – Sean Darcy. The midshipman at 24 is fast becoming one of the best in the business and getting better each week.

Seven. The ensigns – Just to name a few, Adam Cerra, Caleb Serong, Josh Treacy, Brandon Walker, Andrew Brayshaw the envy of every other ship in the AFL. Admirals in no-time.

Eight. The roustabout – Michael Walters. Has been seasick sometimes during the wild weather but continues to be the one to watch. Look out if they make the finals.

MY GRIPE OF THE WEEK

When are clubs going to realise that we are not dumb?  Since when has “managed” not meant “dropped”. This week Ratugolea and Higgins (both Geelong) have been left out “managed”. The bard Colin Ritchie and myself dropped them last week!

About Bob Utber

At 80 years of age Citrus Bob is doing what he wanted to do as a 14 year-old living on the farm at Lang Lang. Talking, writing, watching sport. Now into his third book on sports history he lives in Mildura with his very considerate wife (Jenny ) and a groodle named "Chloe On Flinders". How good is that.

  1. Les Everett says

Pick on someone else next time Bob

  2. CITRUS BOB says

Sorry Les I won’t touch them or the rest of the season after the performance against the Bluebaggers. Make it hard to make the finals now.
    Who else can I jinx?

  3. Rulebook says

The main thing I don’t like the non selection of Luke Valente !

  4. Daryl Schramm says

I picked Freo and Essendon for my preseason top 8 this year. Very disappointing result against the ‘in form’ Carlton last week while a Dons victory over the Cats was more in hope than anything else. Didn’t have Swans or Dees in so my rigid approach to tipping this year has not worked.

  5. CITRUS BOB says

RULE – what has happened to Valente?

DS- Good pre-season tips but still a few games to go . I am still not sure of the eight at this stage other than to say Brisbane and Geelong are certs at the top. Not sure about the Fuschias though.
