Almanac Football – Carey-Bunton Medal: State of Origin team to be selected
SELECTORS ON THE JOB FOR ORIGIN TEAM
Selectors for the NSW AFL State of Origin team, Gerard Healy, Mark McClure, Wayne Carey, Michael Sheahan and Rod Gillett, are poring over the likely selections for the 2020 team.
“The selectors are currently working on a preliminary team,” said Chairman Richard Colless.
“We will develop a matrix which highlights the players in contention, the locks, and the positions to provide the basis for the final phase of the selection process,” he said.
Healy, Sheahan, Gillett, and Colless were all selectors for the NSW Greatest Team last season, while Carey (captain) and McClure were selected in the Greatest Team.
It is still proposed to announce the team at the end of the home-and-away season and to hold an awards ceremony for the Carey-Bunton Medal in Sydney after the finals.
Meanwhile GWS Giants mid-fielder Jacob Hopper (Leeton-Whitton Crows) was the only NSW player to poll votes in the Carey-Bunton Medal based on the votes of the AFL Coaches Association in the last round.
Gold Coast Suns co-skipper Jarrod Witts remains at the top of the leader board with 31 votes after Round 14.
