Almanac Cricket: Pomborneit Cricket Club 2019/20 Pre-Season Review

Welcome to our pre-season review, keeping you updated on all the happenings at the Pomborneit Cricket Club.

A very busy off-season at Bulls HQ. Two new teams, namely adding a Division 2 team and an Under 16 girls team, sees the Pomborneit CC fielding 6 teams in the 2019/20 season.

The club held it’s Annual General Meeting on the 28th of July. David Murphy as President, Luke Reynolds as Secretary and Julie Whytcross as Treasurer were all re-elected in their respective positions, Matthew Richardson moved from Junior Vice President to Vice President and Patrick Johnstone joined the committee for the first time as Junior Vice-President.

The club moved quickly to reappoint Grant Place as skipper of the First XI and as club coach soon after the 2018/19 premiership win, which was Place’s first season in charge.

With the club returning to Division 2 ranks for the first time since the 2011/12 season, veteran Luke Reynolds has stepped back from Division 1 cricket to captain the Division 2 Bulls.

Three time Division 3 team champion Matthew Richardson has been appointed as our 3rd XI captain. “Richo” has played 169 senior games for Pomborneit, this being his first chance to take on a captaincy role.

With two outstanding candidates almost impossible to split, the club has appointed Charlie Voutier and Sam Whytcross as co-captains for the 2019/20 season. Both Sam and Charlie started in the Under 13’s and have grown into fine young men who will lead the way in their final season of colts cricket.

A great day was had as girls of all ages were encouraged to come and have a go at the great game of cricket. Current Melbourne CC Women’s player and multiple Victoria Country representative Steph Townsend was in attendance to run the drills, the girls in attendance very much enjoying her style of coaching.

The Pomborneit Cricket Club will be fielding an Under 16 girls team in the neighbouring Colac District Cricket Association in 2019/20. The club was thrilled to get Steph Townsend to agree to coach the team in it’s inaugural season. Training sessions are held every Wednesday night from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, with the girls set to play matches beginning in November.

Many thanks to Steve Murphy for compiling our memorable 2018/19 season into print. Full of reviews and colour photos, the Annual Report looks magnificent and is hoped to now be a yearly production. A handful of copies are still available, contact Dave or Luke if you’d like to purchase a copy.

A much deserved honour in June for Dave Murphy as he was recognised by the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning and the Pomborneit Recreation Reserve committee for his huge contribution to the improvements and upkeep of the Reserve. Well done Spud!

Once again we headed over to the wonderful new indoor facility in Mortlake for four sessions before outdoor training commenced back at the club. Some great attendances throughout, with over 30 training on a couple of the nights at Mortlake.

A successful day was held selling sausages at the Colac Bunnings store in September. A big thank you to Marlin at The Butcher’s Cut in Cobden for donating the sausages.

The club’s new coterie group the “12th man club” has had fantastic support since starting in January. Many thanks to Steve “Churchy” Murphy for the incredible job he has done to get it all up and running. While there are many great reasons to join (great prizes, social events, supporting the development of the club and it’s facilities), becoming a member of the group is worth every cent just to see Churchy’s hilariously entertaining videos for the prize draws!

Registrations for the Pomborneit Cricket Club’s 2018/19 Woolworths Cricket Blast program are now open!

With 5 sessions leading into Christmas (beginning of November 21st) and 4 sessions in February as the Big Bash League reaches it’s climax, the Junior Blasters (boys and girls aged 5-7) and Master Blasters (boys and girls aged 8-10) programs are a fantastic introduction to the great game of cricket, offering participants the chance to experience batting, bowling and fielding in a fun filled environment.

All boys and girls who register with the Pomborneit Cricket Club Woolworths Blast program will receive a complimentary Melbourne Renegades membership.

We had 28 registrations last season for our inaugural Woolworths Cricket Blast and look forward to welcoming new and previous Blasters for the 2018/19 season.
