Almanac Baseball: Ruminating on MLB and the ABL in 2021

With another month to go of the regular MLB season and the ABL sides putting their rosters together for a mid-November start, it’s a good time to survey the landscape in both competitions.

The standings haven’t moved too much in the MLB since the All-Star Game with the notable exception of the Red Sox. Their pitching rotation has been found wanting and their offense has lacked venom. Rather than dominating teams early, they are playing up catchup ball far too often. The return of Chris Sale and the development of Bobby Dalbec have been the two brightest spots in recent times.

At this stage, the Dodgers and Giants are looking the strongest in the National League with both likely to take postseason slots as pennant winners and wild cards winners. In the American League, the three divisional leaders (Astros, White Sox and Rays) all look like contenders while the wild card spot is likely to be a shoot-out between the mighty Sox and the Evil Empire (Yankees).

Shohei Ohtani is still out in front on the home run leaderboard. Pitching ace Max Scherzer has transitioned seamlessly to the Dodgers. Sitting alongside Buehler, Urias and Kershaw he adds a lot to a rotation that will make for an imposing force in October.

Back here, there has been a bit of movement with signings ahead of the ABL season. Once again the Melbourne Aces have a formidable roster and are well placed for a three-peat. The Adelaide Giants are reaping the rewards of their new owners splashing some cash.

Things could still be a bit precarious by the opening weekend, but hopefully, we will be able to get things underway on time. It was a miserable season for North and I have been documenting the travails of the Wallabies, so I’m really looking forward to some Aces action.

Thank God for sport, hey Almanackers!

About

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.
