Almanac Baseball: A Beacom of Light

The cancellation of the Australian Baseball League this summer has deprived local fans of the opportunity to get out to the ballpark. Last weekend, the Melbourne Aces addressed that gaping hole when they hosted a three-game series against the Adelaide Giants.

Predictably, each squad was cobbled together when certain players were unavailable due to a certain pandemic you may have heard of.

For a fleeting moment in Game 1, the clock was turned back as John Kennedy took the mound for the Aces and looked every inch the Ace he has been in recent years. With terrific support from Daniel McGrath, the home team got the win in a shortened, 7-frame hitout.

The Giants rebounded strongly in the final two games to clinch the series. Ultimately, the scoreboard proved of little interest to most people in comparison to a moment that occurred in Game 2.

For the first time in Australian professional baseball history, a female pitcher took to the mound. At the tender age of 17, Genevieve Beacom, looked composed on Saturday night. She got her three outs and walked off to the dugout. It was only a brief appearance but one that will reverberate down the years.

Genevieve garnered a lot of worldwide attention, as evidenced in the MLB clip below, but, far more importantly, she brought attention to a sport where it is possible for everyone to be involved. I couldn’t help ruminating on the tortured progress of ‘women’s sport’ and how it would be so much better to see more Genevieves playing alongside Garys, more Rachels with Robs etc.

One for all. All for one. Can other sports rise to the call? Hope so.

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.

Ruminator, what a great story and thanks for promoting this. Another home run for women, if I can mix my Baseball metaphors. Let’s hope that Genevieve finds her way to the Majors. A Beacom of light indeed!!

Fabulous story Brian. I had no idea this milestone had occurred. Thanks for posting with the video.

  3. What impressed me most was her composure and just sheer lack of being overawed by the occasion. This was a stepping stone on her journey and she doesn’t have the time now to step back and self congratulate for the glass ceilings she’s pitching fast balls through…one to watch!
