AFL International Cup

It’s back … soon! The AFL International Cup, will be here in Melbourne August 5th to 19th. I have been to the last few Cups (held every 3 years) and was amazed that so few people attended these games and that it was rarely mentioned in the mainstream media. So make sure you at least head to Royal Park and see some great and not so great footy. And it’s free (well, it was in the past).

Fingers crossed it gets a better crowd this time. Unfortunately I will be away (in Canada and the US) but will be checking out some Canadian AFL games while I’m there. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the St. Johns Puffins, the Toronto Dingos and have even planned to meet up with Lumpy Palmer, the President of the Edmonton Australian Football League. And I might even do a match report for the Almanac.

I’m barracking for Canada in this competition, and Justin T does have something to do with that!

    Go Canada!

  2. Thanks for the heads-up, Denise !!

  3. Hey Denise, I’ll be on Canada too. If I can drop a couple of kilos might fit into my Canada guernsey from the last series (they sold them as fundraisers). Will bring along a 6 pack of Molson Canadian now that Dan’s is stocking it.

The IC games are a lot of fun. Recommend getting down to a game or two, and as they’re held at the one 3-oval expanse of Royal Park you can pick and choose which game looks most interesting.

I saw quite a few games at the last cup. It is really interesting that the skill that was the hardest to master was kicking over the man on the mark! Time and time again, the kick would go straight into the hands of the bloke on the mark.
There is an article in today’s PNG Post Courier about a young boy from the squatter settlements in Mt Hagen who is apparantly a gun but hasn’t got the cash to get to Port Moresby for the national selection trials. See http://postcourier.com.pg/yako-verge-rising-afl/
    Go PNG!
