AFL 1998 – Twenty Years On: Geelong Cats (12th)

The burden of four recent Grand Final losses finally told on the Cats by 1998. With your Abletts, your Brownlessess, your Couches, your Bairstows all departed, this squad wasn’t yet replenished by your Lings, your Enrights, your Kellys, your Chapmans, your Johnsons or indeed your Ablettsesses.

Future flag winners Scarlett, King and Milburn were still learning the caper but it would be a grim next few seasons for the Hoopotonians and this selection of the comparatively obscure. Even David Mensch’s form fell away, that’s how low things were.

So if you’ve spied any of this lot grooving at Grovedale, bopping at Bell Park or hooning at Herne Hill over the past couple of decades, please fill us in.

Comments

  1. 1998, the second last year i supported Geelong. First time out of the finals since 1990.

Brett Spinks the boom full forward, or so was the premise/promise. Sadly not to be.

Grant Tanner did his knee @ the G versus Essendon in 1997. Pity; he was a good player.

Sean Simpson; his son is now at Geelong.

Clint Bizzel. I never understood the hype about him.

Tim Hargraves. Up to the O&MFL where he did very well, thankyou.

    Matthew Scarlett, now you’re talking.

    Glen!

  2. Toby Thomson says:

Saw Joel McKay play his first game and maybe only game.
Then there was a supporters function after the game at Planet Hollywood, he was there with Bizzell and Hall I think.
Leigh Colbert played his last game for the Cats that year.

  3. Stone Cold Steve Baker says:

Was at the MCG the day Jason Snell snapped his foot, ankle and leg bones. Sickening stuff.

  4. Earl O'Neill says:

Clint Bizzell later dated ‘Australia’s favourite witch’, Fiona Horne.

  5. Ta Earl.

I knew Bizzel had a claim to fame of some sorts.

    Glen!

  6. Clint Bizzell’s family had a service station just around the corner from our place in Brisbane – Latrobe Tce Paddington. Had a poster of the Geelong team on the wall behind the jump.

The Cats were an almost side. Loved that move when they needed a lift: Brad Sholl to the guts.

  7. Actually it was more of a garage.

  8. Swish sent to Sam Smart and Kris Massie who thanked you re the memories
