by Josh Barnstable
It’s a question I would have to work hard to find the answer for. But I would enjoy sifting through the memories my brain has stored. What is my favourite moment I have experienced in a game of AFL footy?
It would have to be from the Round 19 clash between North Melbourne and Collingwood in 2005. The Roos, 18 points down with about 3:20 left on the clock, were facing a tough task against the 15th placed Magpies. The Kangas needed a win to consolidate their place in the finals but with Nathan Buckley, Paul Licuria and Shane Wakelin in form, were behind for most of the day. The Roos got the ball deep in defence though, and a short kick to Michael Firrito alone in the middle was followed by a run and shot at goal by Spud. He missed, but Saverio Rocca took a great contested mark right on the behind line. He got up, quickly ran around and snapped a goal on his non-preferred left foot. Margin 12 points.
Out of the middle, the ball spilled out to Shannon Grant. He ran towards the 50, taking a rather unorthodox bounce and, with hardly any control on the ball, put his lethal boot to ball. It sailed through. A very awkward kick, a very awkward run up, a very awesome goal! Margin six points.
The ball goes back to the middle, Glenn Archer throws his body into the pack of players; the ball squirts out to Grant again. He gets a proper run-up this time and drives home a long goal from outside 50, drawing scores level, 14.14(98) apiece.
The Pies win the ball forward at the next restart though, and the ball is locked in the Magpie forward line with a minute to go. After a great smother by Glenn Archer, the ball spills out towards the wing but Ben Davies, who would later play for North, drives the ball back in, 30m out from goal. Daniel Pratt stands strong, and marks. He gets up and moves it out to Daniel Wells who had been having a quiet game before stepping up. He moves the ball along the wing to Brent Harvey. Boomer has a bounce, gets past the wing and boots the ball towards the boundary line at the 50. Thompson! Nathan Thompson takes a great diving mark, and with just 25 seconds remaining, needs a score to win. But from 48m out, 5m in from the boundary line, he will need to exert his best goalkicking to land a score. He comes in, with a 42% at goal according to Nine, and boots it long and hard. It goes, it goes, it goals! Thompson thrusts his fists up in the manner of Hulk Hogan, and salutes the crowd. Roos win by six points, 15.14(104) to 14.14(98).
A funny sort of game, the Pies kicked 7.7(49) in the first half, 7.7(49) in the second, while the Roos kicked 7.7 and 8.7 respectively, yet the Pies led for most of the day. This game set the Roos up for their first finals appearance since 2002, while the Pies languished at the bottom of the ladder but picked up Dale Thomas in the draft, and have become a premiership contender in the past few years. But, with the tape of the game wearing thin, I know that when it bites the dust, I have Youtube to relive my most memorable moment in the AFL.
Very tasty piece Josh.
exams
Steve, what is this “other” mistake I have made?
Well Gigs I had a look at your Round 16 Almanac piece, Essendon V Bulldogs and I looked down to your votes and saw: 3. Lake 2. Lake 1. Hahn
I thought it might be that. I can tell you that this is NOT my error.
1. I submitted the piece with Johnson getting 2 votes
2. Daff got me to proofread part of the book before publication and I PICKED UP THE ERROR and advised him.
3. Books published – error NOT corrected.
And I have the email trail to prove it! Over to you, Daff…
Thanks Steve.
Gigs, maybe Lake played so well he deserved 5 votes?
lol nice piece eventhough the outcome wasnt to my side.
got back my exam results today!!
:)
:)
Those smiles mean good Danni?
Josh, he should’ve got more Brownlow votes than he did, that’s for sure.
Well done Danni, I presume.

C+ still I PASSED!! and its ALMOST a B!
lol
With your wonderful Almanac efforts and the media superstars you met at the launch, I would have thought that would have been your best subject, Danni.
yeah its not what you think.
Media at my school isnt journalism.
its more like photography and film and learing about the ABC and SBS charters…ARGGGHHH!!! :(
ok, Gigs I believe you. I didn’t think you’d make that mistake.
3 exams down, 3 to go. Art, English and Geography have been all fairly easily, science and maths are the ones I’m worried about, R.E shouldn’t be 2 hard
hahah!! yeah that was i thought!
“ras3/4 shouldnt be hard, its jst RE!”
..boy was i wrong after a whole year of learning SOO MUCHHH INFO the first question on my exam which counts to my ENTER is
Explain the relationship between religion and society:
OMG!! FUDGE ME, FUDGEEEEE ME!!! WE NEVER LEANRT THIS!!! :(
oh well, cant do much about it now…
I think I aced my art exam. I used really descriptive writing and used up all 3 pages to describe on sculpture.
And Gigs, do you count as a media superstar?
ohh lol thats good!
i thought id get a B for my History cos i wrote like all this random stuff, turns out it wasnt random at all!
lol yea sometimes that happens with tests and exams. I always try and put humor in them and use words like beautiful, delicious and extrodinary lol
delicious? LMAOO omg!! LMAOO!!
the relationship between religion and society is delicious??
LMAOO
lol I was talking about a picture in the art exam and I said:
Sure, if the grass was a lush green it would look perfect, but the thing about this is the grass has a contrast of many colours, making it look so real and life-like.
………
okayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
steve…u sound a little…
you know…
like you batting for the other team if you know what i mean.. LMAOO
yea lol I’m always like that with work.
i know this is going to be hard, but ive decided…
no more chocolate! :(
AND im going to start running for 30mins everyday so i can lose a few kilos.
…this is sooo going go be HARD!!
:(
Don’t forget to bring the footy!
And don’t lose too many kilos, you might regret it! lol
..i doubt i will ever lose too many kilos!! and i also very much doubt that i would regret it!! lol
My theory is the more kilos you lose the more nasty you become. Or am I just using my brother as an example?
Danni, once I found a Collingwood footy in a trolley on the footpath.
I once found it a Collingwood footy at the local footy.
I’ve decided to do some more exercise, i just finished tennis training and contemplating whether i should go for a kick
nasty as in attitude? or nasty as in not appealing?
…YOU FOUND MY FOOTY!! :)
I ran home from school and I played basketball for 2 hours. We’re all healthy!
Nasty as in attitude.
what were you doing with a trolley, Danni? haha
well you see…
:)
lol
i think if i stop chocolate(wince) and carbs like bread, drink lots of water and run for 30mins everyday i should like hawt by xmas.

Lol i get called Barnstable at school when i do something wrong, which is very, VERY rare…
Who else would I be talking about Danni?
Just like when I get called Healy, lol. Now that’s really rare.
okk good then! :)
cos i relly dont think i look that bad compared to other supporters!
i never get in trouble..well besides the occasional:
“why are you wearing makeup?”
and
“your hair band is not the right shade of blue!”
I was annoying the teacher so much in science today, i just didnt want to do any work so i put my head in my arms and just sat like that for the whole period.
lol Josh good on ya.
I always get in trouble for being late, and I’ve got an 8 month over due library book!
8 month??? Try an overdue book since year 7! :)
come on! what about me and my rebellion??
lol its hard work hiding from teachers who give a spray about wearing makeup!
I’ve actually got an over due book from Grade 3 as well
……
you guys are badd….
Primary school books don’t count though I guess lol.
lol my english teacher is leaving to Germany and today was our last lesson so we were all wishing her luck and you get me going:
“miss can you bring back a hot German for me?” lol
shes so funny shes like..”umm no i dont think i can”
LMAO
hot german? who’s heard of one of those?
Richard Kruspe..
Im not saying he’s hot, but he’s a diva of the women
who?
I love it how you guys got in trouble from Uncle Crio (comment 35 in the “Favourite Almanac Piece” article) for too match chatter.
You naughty kids! (Well he is a teacher after all…)
Yeah we shouldn’t have talked so much in that Gigs.
When Crio ask Question Crio want answer.
Well i suppose we would get antsy if you older blokes started having conversations on our reports lol
Yeah true Josh. But Gigs, Crio, Daff, John and Mark Freeman aren’t a fab 5 are they?
Lucky you guys didn’t talk this much at the Launch. Anson never would’ve got his speech in!
Anson hasn’t made an appearence on this site yet has he?
He has a piece on Geelong, but you have to find it on the home page, not in the Knackers list
Oh yeah I remember that.
I think I’ll do a piece on the cricket tomorrow
gigs im still dying to knwo how u lost 10 kilos!!! id be happy to lose 7.
I hope this does nothing to derail Michael’s trip to the harbour city, but the Swans v Tigers game in Round 3 has been moved to a Saturday night, while Port v Lions is now being played during the day.
Danni,
I walk home from work most days (about 5km). I do 50 push-ups every morning. I’ve just started playing cricket again for the first time in many years.
And I’ve cut down (a little) on the junk food.
That’s about it really.
I wish i could do those things Gigs. Walking home for me is about 12km, but i make up for it by playing two sports i guess.
wow gigs, thats really good!
i used to be active until i hit highschool and took the serious study routine.
but i finish school for the year 2mro so ill start going for runs.
im as of today A year 12 student!! :)

he’s very good Danni, you are extremely lucky to have him. Actually, I don’t think Melbourne did the right thing by delisting him
Hahahaha lol Matt Windley is a funny bloke. He made a joke about 69 and was making ya mum jokes.
Cant believe Matt Maguire has gone to the Lions, and Hooper to the Hawks.

btw currently making hisroy notes and the French Revolution is PRETTY COOL!! :)
Im looking up footy videos on youtube
hmm i wonder if there any vids on my new husband and his footy skills!!
:) hehe
Lol, im looking up goals after the siren, and found a trend:
2003, Chris Tarrant (number 20) against Adelaide
2005, Justin Longmuir (number 20) against St Kilda
2009, Mitch Morton (number 20) against Fremantle
2010, Josh Barnstable (number 20) against Shepparton East!
hahahaha very funny, Mitch Morton’s wasn’t after the siren?
It was close enough.
OHHH My fav was deff the Barnstable kick! :)
Lol, i actually had a shot to win the game before but missed :(
Not the tarrant kick, Danni?
well if i was there cheerleading you would have kicked it!! :) lol
ohh with steve i might add. Barnstable fanclub!
Danni would have been a lil 11 year old when Tarrant guided that ball through for a goal
Well guess what, I put my team in front in the dying minutes of my under 12 grand final with a brilliant goal. but we lost :(
….AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!
11? Wow…time has gone so fast im 18 in May!!
naww poor steve! its okay im sure the fact that you looked pretty in you gersey was enough for everone to get over it!
You got any after the siren goal moments Danni? lol
Well im off to watch a footy DVD and read the Almanac, goodnight Fab 3 lol
Oh and Damo texted me today so he is still around so dont worry Danni lol, adios
I’m really good at kicking goals from the boundary line on my non- preffered side. I go to the park and always practice drop punts from beyond the boundary line from about 35 metres out.
yes, yes i do!
i was at the pasrk near my house watching the local footy team playing a semi and the number 2 guy was pretty hawt. so anyway he got a kick after the siren to win the game, he kicked it!
everyone was celebrating and then i hung around afterwards he came out of the change rooms and i was jst kicking a footy around, badly…no heels lol!
so he comes over and joins in! his older brother rocks up and b4 he leaves he…. welll…i think ill keep that part to myself. lol
ohh yay my damo!!
aww cya josh..
jst missed out on my final siren story!!
goodnight lol. I need to text Damo.
hahahaha Danni, you should’ve kicked with us in barefeet at the launch then
i wasnt barefoot! that still hurts.
i had converse on that day… yeahh that guy was cute….
ummm lets just say..
he didnt hold back in tackling and im not a fast runner!! lol
Ewwwww lol i read it Danni. Bye
Steve, Damo said he may be able to come to that Roos v Cats game next y
Hang on, why was he mad at you?
Next year*
Oh ok well all go
..he was the opposite of mad steve!!
might have as well been playing kiss-chasey!!
oh ok. Wasn’t he as good looking as his brother?
anyway gotta go cya
I knew the Windies were bad, but not this bad…
Hope they recover and make a game of it.
I think 480 or whatever they declared at was not enough, but it should see them safe.
Yeah 4/75 I’m suprised!, it’s the first time I heard the scores today with 4 exams!
What’s your opinion on that new umpire referral system? I don’t like it, it delays the match.
Yeah its useless, umpires arent needed these days. The Windies have appealed every bloody decision.
Hey guys, I’m back.
Couldn’t be happier with Richmonds draft.
Dusty Martin, tall promising forward in Griffiths and an exciting player in Troy Taylor at pick 51. A bit annoyed we let Vardy go since he wasn’t taken until 41 but still.
Exciting times ahead.
My Richmond supporting mate told me today he was real disappointed the Tigers didnt get Bastinac.
I’m really happy with Cunnington, but estatic that we got Aaron Black at pick 25. Couple of potential goalkickers late in the draft that we got as well.
Biggest shock of the draft: Matt Maguire going to the Lions and Matthew Panos not being picked up.
Yeah North did really well.
Stunned about Panos. Wasn’t he supposed to be a second round pick?
Dissapointing nobody picked up Majack Dawe.
I keep getting Majak Daw and Max Gawn mixed up. I was hoping the Roos would pick up Daw.
Panos was supposed to go to Port at pick 9 but then other players came into the equation.
Yeah, I can’t believe Moore went at pick 9 and Gysberts at pick 11. Both were before picked earlier than expected but I guess it’s good for the school.
Oh is that them? Moore looks alright, a bit like Ryan O’Keefe while the player the Dogs got with pick 16 was a bit of a surprise, so much of a surprise i cant remember his name.
Yeah Dogs got McMillian-Pittard who Quayle seems to rate. I haven’t seen much of him.
……….JOSH THOMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:) hehehehhe!!
