2023 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai
Grand final day—
the stadium fills
with hope
Welcome to the annual celebration of Australian footy and haiku!
Calling all haiku poets and other vagabonds from every nook and cranny on the planet to participate in the Annual AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai for 2023. This is the one day of the year when haiku poets, expert and novice, turn their Zen minds to the rip-roaring, white-knuckle, roller-coaster experience of a footy match to produce a live haiku call of the AFL Grand Final. It is a Facebook only event, which you can join here.
This year the Pies will take on the Lions.
Like the game itself, there are no hard and fast rules for the kukai. Any style of haiku (or senryu) is acceptable. Even 5-7-5. One line or three. Just keep it nice. I reserve the right to remove any ‘questionable’ posts.
So, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, whoever you barrack for, send us some haiku of your experience of watching the game. Whether it be from inside the stadium, your couch, bed, dunny or the local pub, send us your haiku throughout the game. This is a most unique grand final experience.
The event is open now and we will be accepting haiku all week in the lead-up to the game to capture some of the pre-game silliness.
Happy haiku-ing and see you at the game!

About rob scott
Rob Scott (aka Haiku Bob) is a peripatetic haiku poet who calls Victoria Park home. He writes haiku in between teaching whisky and drinking English, or something like that.

JTH sent me an invite on FB. I had no idea what it was about. Now,8 I have an idea I’m even more reluctant. You guys are far too clever for me!
Might have a crack this year HB!
I might think a bit further on this for this year HB. I hope it is a success.
Daryl, don’t be scared. Lots of haiku novices (& some illiterates!) get involved. It’s a bit of fun.
Cheers,
HB.
