2018 AFL Potential Premiers?

Earlier in the year I wrote an article that detailed the idea I had to annually design AFL premiership posters similar to those published by newspapers and the like for the aspiring teams. That article featured posters that I had done for each of the teams to have won the flag since 2000.

This idea started back in 2016 when I designed posters for that year’s eight in anticipation of who the two grand finalists would be. Back when I wrote the article I mentioned that come September yet another eight potentials would go on show. Though it does seem a little silly to do posters for the whole eight I like to do these in advance of the finals rather than during them, without knowing who’ll win, naturally it means doing the whole eight. It also seems a shame to put the effort in and not show the whole lot of them off.

So here you have them. Potential premiership posters for each finalist from 8th to 1st. When the final siren sounds its last on grand final day yet another lucky mascot from below will join the collection I have already amassed, but who’ll be the lucky team?

About Ben Kirkby

Ben moved to Melbourne at the start of 2016 from country NSW. Shortly after declaring his intent to live in Melbourne permanently, his uncle Sam suggested "If you're going to live here you've got to get along to the footy at some point". After seeing his first football match (Hawthorn vs Sydney, round 9 2016) Ben's interest in AFL took off in a way highly unexpected by both himself and his extended family. Ben's team alignment was uncertain for a time, seeing an interest taken primarily toward Hawthorn during much of the 2016 season, but during the finals series he declared his intent to follow the way of his cousins and uncle and become a Richmond Supporter, primarily on the grounds of them being the team he most wanted to see win, among a long list of other reasons. Needless to say the following year saw him very happy with his choice.

  1. Awesome! These all look mad!

  2. Citrus Bob says:

Ben – love to show them in Australia’s biggest and finest Football Art Exhibition. Can you get in touch with me ASAP.

    BRILLIANT

  3. Citrus Bob says:

    Probably need 10,000 Cats!

  4. Earl O'Neill says:

Great work, Ben. But there’s only seven.

  5. george smith says:

Bit of a job to change those 8s to a zero, to match my other Magpie premiership posters – or maybe a 2011 for the 2011 Night Premiership, haven’t got one of those yet.

Memories of 1980. All the contenders had an iron on for t shirts in the Melbourne Sun. Didn’t work very well though, when you ironed them…

  6. Ben The Artist says:

Earl O’Neil, I did eight but for some reason my GWS one hasn’t come up. some technical difficultly perhaps? can’t say whats the matter.
Thanks Citrus Bob, I have your contacts so I’ll try again at getting on to you.
George Smith, you might like to check out my previous article with posters for all the premiers from 2000 onward, there’s another magpie in that lot.
    Thanks all for your appreciation!

  7. Hi Ben and Earl. Somehow the GWS poster dropped off. It’s now been returned. It seems to be there now.

  8. Ben The Artist says:

Thank you John Harms, greatful for the effort.

  9. Looks great. Why is the Eagle wearing #18? Daniel Venables.
Reckon the “Cat” is a Tiger that devoured it’s prey and is wearing it’s clothes. A la the old jumper swap tradition – Doc and Tuddy in ’66. St Kilda’s only premiership cup held aloft by Doc Baldock resplendent in black and white stripes.

  10. Ben The Artist says:

    ’18 as in 2018.

  11. Earl O'Neill says:

    The GWS Cyclops, neat!

  12. Stainless says:

The black (missing?) teeth on the Magpie. Beautifully understated stereotyping!

  13. My body gave a shiver looking at the second one! Good work all up.

  14. Rick Kane says:

7 pretenders and the Hawks poster looks just right!

    Cheers

  15. the new WEG! Great work!

  16. ORSM now there are only two teams left..
How do I get my Collingwood one to me in PERT by this week..
