2013 – A Season in Song – Round 3: Quantity and Quality

Undeterred by Round 2’s failure to hit the airwaves, I went all out with a grab bag of ditties after Round 3.

With Carlton and a few other teams winless, the usual Crow Showdown disappointment, my frustration with the witless interpretation of the “below the knees” rule, Jack Watts’ demotion and subsequent no-show, I also harked back to a day in the mid-90s at the Western Oval where I sighted Rostrevor’s favourite son.

Greg used the “O and 3” idea to have me batting .667 at the ditty caper, although he pronounced it “nought and three” not “oh and three”

Anyway, here they were:

O and 3 (Let It Be)

When I look at the ladder Monday, one thing that occurs to me
Four teams on the bottom, O and 3
They haven’t won a single game yet, lost a few of them closely
Right down at the tail end, O and 3
O and 3, O and 3, O and 3, O and 3
They can’t make the finals, O and 3

And all the commentators watching, one thing that they all agree
Goodbye to September, O and 3
For though there are still twenty rounds left, the is every chance that they will be
Making up the numbers, O and 3
O and 3, O and 3, O and 3, O and 3
Trouble Mickey Malthouse, O and 3
O and 3, O and 3, O and 3, O and 3
Brad Scott, Kevin Sheedy, O and 3
O and 3, O and 3, O and 3, O and 3
Not forgetting Mark Neeld, O and 3

Hit Below The Knees (Turning Japanese)

They’ve changed the rules, they’ve changed the rules
Another reason to dislike the game
Kevin Bartlett can take the blame here
Someone gets injured, so break loose does hell
Got players pulling up and pulling out
Being scared to go to ground

Hit below the knees
I’ve been hit below the knees
I want a free kick
Hit below the knees
I’ve been hit below the knees
I want a free kick
Hit below the knees
I’ve been hit below the knees
I want a free kick
Hit below the knees
I’ve been hit below the knees
I want a free kick

Jack (Like A Rolling Stone)

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be in the twos, the ressies, the magoos
Kickin off the dew
Playing with unknowns
I’m going to refuse
I’m gonna stay at home
==============================

True Story (Adelaide)

I saw him in the outer at the old Western Oval
Wearing a Redlegs t-shirt from ’73
He was carrying a beer, but I doubt it was Coopers
He sat near the fence, rested his Record on his dicky knee
Jars kicked eight goals in a row
Kym Koster 1 Brownlow
Twas Paul Kelly, Paul Kelly

(Should Have Stayed at Home) (From St Kilda to Kings Cross)

From Spencer St to Gepps Cross on the Crows supporter bus
The bus bypasses Ballarat, through Beaufort and Ararat
I’m going to Showdown XXXIV, hoping I can get a good seat
No problems, it’s a Port home game

Have you ever seen Gepps Cross, where the five roads all join up ?
All the car yards and the big pub, near Enfield High, we got lost
I hope that Danger has tonight
A big one just like last year
Its more than just another game

Fairweather Ian was on TV
With Ann Wills, Ernie Sigley and Lionel Williams

Before the game I might go down to the Glenelg esplanade
There’s been lots of new construction, buy gelati and a postcard
I’ll give you all of the Wimmera (all that land, not much water)
For a win to good old Adelaide
I’ll give you all of the Wimmera (all that land, not much water)
For a win to good old Adelaide

Thanks ‘Book – you probably have to be a certain age to appreciate the
