2013 – A Season in Song – Round 1

I’m not sure why, but in 2013 I decided to have a crack at contributing some “witty ditties” to the Coodabeens Footy Show.

Below were my attempts after Round 1

Got no idea why I picked on Melbourne, I’m a Crows supporter after all. To my surprise, “Dees of Old” made it to the airwaves, or at least the idea did, as Greg Champion fleshed out the bones into a much better version (including a reference to Denis Jones, which transported me back to his years as coach of the SANFL Bulldogs).

I was more acquainted than most with the Jack Frost story, as he lives nearby and I know his parents quite well, and yes, they nearly didn’t make it to the ground in time.

Dees of Old
(to the tune of Heart of Gold)

I’ve been through Bayley
I’ve been through Balmey
I’ve even been through Neale Daniher
I’ve been through hard times
I’ve been through harsh times
I’m still yearnin’ for the Dees of old
And I’m getting old

Dees Are Still My Side
(to the tune of Walk on The Wild Side)

Went to the MCG Easter Sunday
Hoped the mighty Dees had come to play
Bought the Record on the way
Stretched my legs and took my seat
I said hey mate, the Dees are still my side
I said hey mate, the Dees are still my side

But against the Power
They lose they lose they lose lose lose
They lose they lose they lose lose lose …

On In Five
(to the tune of Walk The Line – for Jack Frost, last minute call-up for Collingwood)

I had a big feed of some Easter eggs
Washed them down with a food court pie
Coach said Jack you have to look alive
Shaw’s come down crook, you’re on in five

My folks stayed home, I wasn’t in the side
Jumped in the cab to watch me (#45)
They made it in the nick of time
Saw my debut, for the Pies
