2000 – (still not quite) All Australian SSA Team – Who Are The Mystery Boys?

ssa aa team 2000

A year on from this and again without WA, SA and Tas, the 2000 SSA team contained future winners of the Morrish, Crichton and Magarey Medals, a senior All-Australian – anything else?

To my untrained eye, it looked a larger-bodied team than the 1999 selection, but with quite a few names that I’ve never heard of.

Perhaps you have, if so, fill us in.

  1. Why the lack of identifiable names?

    Y2K?

    Curious.

  2. Why the lack of Sandgropers, Croweaters and Apple Islanders?
The current Prime Minister must have used the same Chairman of Selectors for Team Australia.

PB – Not all states were involved in this comp until the mid 2000s, no idea why this was the case.

It was for 15 and unders, so their draft year was 2-3 years later.

Mickey – Maybe 1984/1985 were dud years for virility, I blame Band Aid and USA for Africa.

  5. I have a feeling that a couple of years on from this, David Trotter (middle row) was a very early draft pick for North Melbourne.
In fact, I reckon he played a handful of games (circa 2005), but never made the grade despite high expectations. Maybe had some injuries.

  7. Skip of Skipton says

Five of the six that went on to play in the AFL were top ten picks.

Despite Carlton’s anguish at the time of being stripped of picks 1 and 2 from the 2002 draft, their first pick, Kade Simpson at 45, would retrospectively be a top 5 from that pool.
